DR.

R. SPIERS continued, so long as he lived, to collect materials for the improvement and the enlargement of his great work. These materials, supplemented where necessary, have now been incorporated by most competent hands, and this work, after forty years of success, is the newest exhaustive French Dictionary. This is the only authorized American edition.

This book comprises: (1) all the literary and colloquial words; (2) the principal terms relating to science, art, commerce, industry, and the navy; (3) compound words that are not to be translated; (4) the various meanings of each word arranged in logical order, and separated by numbers; (5) short instances of colloquial or literary uses of words, also of grammatical constructions where difficult; (6) alterations in the meaning of words, according as they are used with adjectives, prepositions, adverbs, etc.; (7) the idioms and colloquial expressions that differ in the two languages; (8) the prepositions required by the government of verbs, adjectives, etc.; (9) irregular or difficult pronunciation made clear; (10) grammatical notes on difficult constructions; (11) typographical signs to distinguish between the proper and figurative uses of words, and marking the style to which they belong; (12) a vocabulary of proper names.

yet concisely, the forms and usages of the present speech of the Castiles, and to fix them in the memory by a graded series of English-Spanish exercises. The work is divided into two distinct parts, a Grammar and a Drill-Book.

The inflected parts of speech are presented on a new, and, it is believed, a more judicious method, and the so-called irregular verbs are considerably reduced in number. A few reading lessons are appended, with an appropriate vocabulary, for those who may not care to follow the exercises.

Spanish Idioms, with their English Equivalents,

Embracing nearly 10,000 phrases. By SARAH CARY BECKER and Señor FEDERICO MORA. 12mo. Half morocco. 330 pages. Mailing Price, $2.00; for introduction, $1.80.

THIS is as nearly as possible a complete collection of Spanish

idioms, or of Spanish phrases which, if literally translated, would fail to convey to foreign ears the sense in which they are understood by Spaniards. No approximately complete collection of these idioms has hitherto been published, either separately, or scattered through any more comprehensive work. The translations have been made with great care, and numerous errors in the readings found in Spanish-English dictionaries are here corrected. The idioms are arranged on a plan so simple that any phrase may be found with the utmost ease. Spanish literature and conversation fairly bristle with idioms, and this difficult feature of the language is here adequately dealt with for the first time.
