In 1910 the excess of males over females in New York City was as follows, at the various age groups: Under 1 year, 1,550; 1 to 4 years, 2,828; 25 to 29 years, 7.917; 30 10 34 years, 17,190; 35 to 44 years, 23,686; 45 to 54 years, 14,930. There were excesses of females at the other ages as follows: 5 to 9 years, 43: 10 to 14 years, 1,235; 15 to 19 years, 25,474; 20 to 24 years, 29.436; 55 to 64 years, 4,465; 65 years and over, 12,957. Infectious diseases in the whole city numbered the following cases: Diphtheria and croup, 12,624; measles, 27,419; scarlet fever, 6,260; smah pox, 14; typhold, 1,442: tuberculosis, 17,494; total, 62,253. Deaths, by chief causes, were: Tuberculosis, 8,825; organic heart, 11,102; pneumonia, 7,268; bronchopneumonia, 3,783; kidney troubles. 6,727; cancer, 4,867; children's diarrhoes (under five years), 3,365. Of the 141,564 babies born in New York City in 1917 there were 37,555 whose parents were natives of the United States: 28,989 babies had Italian parents; 24,099 had Russian or Polish parents; and 10,377 had Austro-Hungarian parents (meaning both parents in every casc). The maternal mortality rate in New York in 1917 (death rate expressed as per 10,000 females fifteen to forty-five years of age), was 4.15, as against 7.44 in 1905.
