is alfo frequently us'd in Scripture for Power, as in Prov. xviii. 10. The NAME of the Lord is a strong Tower, the Righteous runneth into it and is fafe. And in Christ's Prayer for his Difciples; Holy Father, keep through thy Name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one as we are. John xvii. And when Chrift enumerated the Signs, which he said fhould follow them that believe: In my Name fays he, fhall they caft out Devils, fpeak with new Tongues, &c.

II.

THE Baptifm and Power of the Spirit were alfo the Things Chrift bid his Difciples wait for and expect before they went forth to preach the Gofpel, therefore the Words of Chrift Mat. xxviii: 19. may very well be understood to imply the Baptifm of the Spirit, with which the Difciples fhould baptize the Nations, in the Name or Power of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Gnoft.

BUT it may be objected, how could the Difciples baptize with the Spirit? We answer, that it is very plain by divers Inftances in Scripture, that the Apostles and Disciples of Christ, were instrumental in the Hand of God to baptize with the Spirit, or to confer the Holy Ghost. The first Inftance we fhall bring, is that of Peter and John: Acts viii. 14. When the Apostles which were at Je. rufalem beard that Samaria bad receiv'd the Word of God, they fent unto them Peter and John. Who

when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghoft. For as yet he was fallen upon none of them, only they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jefus. Then laid they their Hands on them, and they receiv'd the Holy Ghoft.

THIS Paffage fhews not only that the Apostles Peter and John were inftrumental to confer the Baptifm of the Spirit or Holy Ghoft on the Samaritans, but alfo that Water Baptifm and the Baptifm of the Holy Ghoft, are two distinct and different Baptifms; with the firft they had been baptiz'd by Philip, in the Name of the Lord Jefus, and amongst them was Simon Magus, who 'tis faid was baptized and believ'd; and when he far the Holy Ghost was given through laying on of the Apoftles Hands, be offer'd them Money, faying, Give me alfo this POWER, that on whomsoever Ilay Hands, be may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter faid unto him, Thy Money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the Gift of God may be purchafed with Money. Thou haft neither Part nor Lot in this Matter, for thy Heart is not right in the Sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy Wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the Thought of thine Heart may be forgiven thee, For I perceive that thou art in the Gall of Bitterness, and in the Bond of Iniquity.

NEED any plainer Inftance than this be brought to confute the Opinion of fuch as hold that Water Baptism and the Baptifm of the Spirit, make up the one Baptifm of Chrift? The Samaritans 'tis plain were baptiz'd in the Name of the Lord Jefus, yet had not received the Holy Ghost: This fhows also, that the Notion which the Romanists and others have got, That the Holy Spirit is al-. ways confer'd in a fecret Manner on the baptiz'd Perfon, tho' an Infant, is groundless. Does not this Inftance alfo fhow the Infig-,

nificancy

nificancy of Water Baptifm, and, that it does not wash away Sin, nor purge the Heart from Iniquity? For 'tis faid when the Samaritans be lieved Philip preaching the Things concerning the Kingdom of God, and the Name of Jefus Chrift, they were baptiz'd both Men and Women. Then Simon himself believed also, and when he was baptized, be continued with Philip, and wondred, beholding the Miracles and Signs which were done.

HERE we may plainly fee, that the Baptifm which Philip confer'd on Simon Magus and the Samaritans, was not the Baptifm which Chrift fpake of, when he said to his Difciples, He that believeth and is baptized fhall be faved: For Simon Mark 16. believ'd and was baptized, yet was not faved: 16. Nay, fo far was he from being faved, tho' baptized by an Apostle, that Peter told him, he was in the Gall of Bitterness and in the Bond of Iniquity.

THE next Inftance we fhall bring to show that the Apostles were Inftruments in the Hand of God, to confer the Baptifm of the Holy Ghost, is that of Paul, Acts xix. 1. And it came to pass, that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having paffed through the upper Coafts, came to Ephefus: and finding certain Difciples, He faid unto them. Have ye received the Holy Ghoft fince ye believed? And they faid unto him, we have not fo much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And be faid unto them, unto what then were ye baptized? And they faid unto John's Baptifm. Then faid Paul, John verily baptized with the Baptifm of Repentance, faying unto the People, That they should believe on him which should come after him, that is on Chrift Fefus. When they heard this: they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his Hands upon them, the HOLY GHOST

GHOST came on them; and they SPAKE WITH
TONGUES, and Prophefied.

'Tis obfervable here, that the Disciples at Ephefus, who had not fo much as heard whether there was any Holy Ghoft, and confequently could not have been of the Number of those prefent, to whom Chrift promis'd the Holy Ghoft, yet thefe receiv'd it by the Hands of Paul, and fpake with Tongues and prophefied as the Apofles and Difciples did at the Time of Pentecoft. This is another Inftance that plainly fhows that it was not Water Baptifm, but the Baptifm of the Holy Ghost, which Chrift fpake of, when he gave his Difciples the Commiffion to go into all the World and preach the Gofpel, and told them what Signs should follow them that Believed. For here were fome of the very Signs Chrift promis'd fhould accompany the Believers, and as a learned *M. Pool. Man has noted on this Paffage, thefe Ephefians alfo were fitted to preach the Gofpel unto any Nation or People unto whom they should be fent. This is a Demonstration likewise, that the great Subject of Chrift's Difcourfe, when he was taking his laft Farewel of his Difciples, was concerning the. Difpenfation of the Spirit, and the Power of the Holy Ghost that would be given to the Apostles, and fuch after them as fhould be fent to Preach the Gofpel in the World, and be Witnesses for him.

Cor.2.4.

THE Inftances we have brought, prove that the Holy Ghost was confer'd on Believers by the Prayers and laying on of the Hands of the Apoftles; we fhall now fhow that by their Preaching alfo, they confer'd the Holy Ghost, and executed that Command of Chrift, Go teach all Nations, baptizing them in [or into] the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghoft. My Speech and my Preaching, fays the Apostle Paul to the Corinthi

AND, when Peter gave a Relation how Cornelius and his Kinsfolk were converted by his Preaching, As I began to speak, fays he, the Holy Ghost Act$11.15 fell on them, as on us at the Beginning. Then remembred I the Word of the Lord, how that he faid, John indeed baptized with Water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghoft. This fhows very clearly, that by the Preaching of Peter, the Holy Ghoft was adminiftred to, or confer'd on Cornelius and the Rest, and also that Peter then took thofe Words of Chrift to be relative not to themfelves only, but to the Gentiles alfo, a Thing he did not fo clearly understand till he had the Vifion.

BUT we know it has been, and is objected to us, If the Baptifm of the Holy Ghoft be the only neceffary

By which Grotius, and fome others, underftand Miracles, by which the Doctrine of the Gospel was at firft confirmed; but Vorftius and many others better understand by it the Holy Ghoft's Powerful and Inward Perfwafion of Men's Minds, of the Truth of what was preached by Paul. See Pool's Annot.
