HENRY H. BOURN,
“CHRIST IN THE PENTATEUCH," ETC., ETC.
9, PATERNOSTER ROW.
1016. e. 53
THE following pages have evolved from thoughts respecting the meaning of various expressions met with in our Lord's intercessory prayer. At first they were prepared with the assistance of such authors as Alford, Stier, Bengel, Olshausen, and a few others, and formed the basis of several expository discourses, which at the time of their delivery were appreciated by many intelligent Christians.
Since then, and more especially during the last nine years, in which I have been laid aside from ministerial work, the prayer has been repeatedly and carefully examined, with the additional advantage of such assistance as the works of Westcott, Schaff, Meyer, Lange, Luthardt, Godet, and others could give. Having throughout acknowledged my indebtedness to various authors, there is no necessity for all their names to be mentioned in this place.
