Chapter XVIII.

OF ASSURANCE OF GRACE AND SALVATION.

LTHOUGH hypocrites, and other unregenerate men, vainly deceive themselves with false hopes and carnal umptions of being in the favour of God and estate of ation; a which hope of theirs shall perish;b yet such uly believe in the Lord Jesus, and love him in sinceendeavouring to walk in all good conscience before

1. This infallible assurance doth not so belong to the ace of faith, but that a true believer may wait long, conflict with many difficulties, before he be partaker ;k yet being enabled by the Spirit to know the things ch are freely given him of God, he may, without extranary revelation, in the right use of ordinary means, atthereunto. And therefore it is the duty of every one ve all diligence to make his calling and election sure;m thereby his heart may be enlarged in peace and joy in Holy Ghost, in love and thankfulness to God, and in ngth and cheerfulness in the duties of obedience, the

Eph. i. 13, 14. I. k 1 John v. 13. These things have I written unto you that be3 on the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have nal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 1. 10. Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the De of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. Mark is.. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with s, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. (See Psal. lxxxviii. oughout. Psal. lxxvii. to the 12th verse.)

1 Cor. ii. 12. Now we have received, not the Spirit of the world, the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that freely given to us of God. 1 John iv. 13. Hereby know we, that dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. b. vi. 11, 12. And we desire that every one of you do show the ne diligence, to the full assurance of hope unto the end: that you not slothful, but followers of them who, through faith and patience, erit the promises. Eph. iii, 17 to 19. That Christ may dwell in ar hearts by faith; that ye being rooted and grounded in love, may able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, I depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passetı owledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. m 2 Pet. i. 10. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to ake your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye all never fall.

access by faith unto this grace wherein we stand, and of the glory of God. And hope maketh not ashan love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy given unto us. Rom. xiv. 17. Spirit of God, whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemp1. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evilaking, be put away from you, with all malice.
