THE CANTERBURY MAGAZINE has reached the close of one volume; and is on its progress towards another. Whether with its termination will arrive that of the work itself, I am unable to say, and unwilling to conjecture. I have nothing to complain of. The support which has been given to it, if less than may justify a continuance of the time, labor, and expence which it requires, is at least equal to what was predicted, and probably more than its own pretensions could have claimed. It was an experiment; and failure, should failure be its ultimate fate, will not be accompanied with discredit. The only anticipation in which I have been disappointed, has been the slender amount of contributed articles. This, necessarily threw me upon the resources of a single pen, and though, as my readers may have perceived, I am blessed with that rare virtue, a most sufficient opinion of myself, I am aware they must also have made another discovery, that the MAGAZINE would have been better worth reading, had I been less frequently called upon to practise that virtue, by being relieved from all care but that of selecting the
