Σ. See line 35. It is plain enough that the decree was made at Ilium, and not at Sigeum.

The games and sacrifices, to which the neighbouring towns are invited, seem to be those instituted, or at least projected, by Alexander, (Strabo x111. p. 855. ed. Ox.) to which we may probably refer the Ilian Inscription in our Public Library ;'

'If it be objected, that Professor Porson thought that inscription as old as the archonship of Euclid, (Clarke Camb. Marbles, p. 50.) it may be observed that Clarke here has dropped an important word; nearly as ancient, is the expression given in the Tomb of Alexander, p. 158. By this Porson probably meant no more than that it was of the third or fourth century before the Christian era. The first line is, as I have marked it, uncertain; but it cannot have been, what any one would guess, IAIEIZ ΚΑΙ ΑΙ ΠΟΛΕΙΣ, unless a word or two be supposed wanting after ΠΟΛΕΙΣ. To increase the difficulty, a mutilated inscription, beginning LAIEI KAI ΠΟΛΕΙ ΚΟΙΝΩΝΟΥΣΑΙ ΤΗΣ ΟΣΙΑΣ, is quoted by M. Boissonade (ad Inscr. Actiacam p. 439. or Class. Journal, No. xxxiv. p. 380.) from the Voyage de la Troade, tom. III. p. 30. Is this what Dr. Clarke means when he says that the Cambridge pillar has been inaccurately published from Akerblad's copy in the third volume of Chevalier's Account of Troy? If so, it would seem that Akerblad overlooked or neglected the first line, and afterwards supplied from conjecture ΙΑΙΕΙΣ ΚΑΙ ΠΟΛΕΙΣ, which has been misprinted. But in M. Boissonade's inscription, statim nominatur IПAPXO, of which there is not the slightest vestige on the pillar. Akerblad may have fancied he saw it after ПANHгYPENE, where there is a very faint and doubtful appearance of six or seven letters, as if a word had been effaced by design; but nothing in the least legible. The rest is sufficiently plain as printed by Dr. Clarke. Since writing the above, I have found in Mr. W. Turner's Tour in the Levant, Vol. I. p. 39. part of a similar inscription copied in 1812, from a pillar between Bounarbashi and Alexandria Troas:

Read AHMHTPIOr in the third line. The rest is easily corrected from the Cambridge Marble; but the question respecting Akerblad still remains unanswered.

Nos. v. and VII. were presented by J. Hawkins, Esq. of Bignor Park, Sussex, who had received No. vii. as a present from Mr. Edward Lee, a Turkey Merchant. No. v. was found in 1797, “ precisely on the spot where the ruins of Dyme are to be sought for." Mr. Hawkins.

In line 7. ΑΡΧΩΝ is put by mistake for ΑΡΧΕΙΩΝ, (see 22.) and line 18. ΠΑΡΕΧΩΡΙΣΑ for ΠΑΡΕΧΩΡΗΣΑ, which is a very ancient example of iotacism. As to line 14, I once thought that after ΠΡΟΣ there had been some proper name, especially as the lambdas had much the appearance of imperfect chis. But the letter is quite as small in ΟΛΗΣ line 3. The graver seems to have put ΑΛΛΗΣ for ΑΛΛΗΛΟΥΣ. In line

18. of a very long and very curious inscription copied by Mr. Hyde in the Oasis, and admirably made out by Doctor Young and M. Letronne, there is this phrase: (Class. Journal, No. xLv. p. 158.) ἵνα δὲ μηδαμόθεν βαρύνῃ τὰς πρὸς ἀλλήλους συναλλα γὰς τὸ τῶν δημοσίων ὄνομα, μηδὲ συνέχωσι τὴν κοινὴν πίστιν οἱκαταχρώμενοι. Read συνχέωσι.

Τ. 21. ΔΑΜΙΟΡΓΩΝ. This form of the word occurs in the Petilian tablet' and perhaps in Cyriacus Anconitanus, No. 62. or Muratori, p. 590. ΕΠΙΔΑΜΙΟΡ. ΗΓΑΒΟΥΡΙΟΥΝΙΚΑΝΔΡΙΔΑ. Muratori puts a lacuna after ΔΑΜΙΟΡ. where in the Roman edition of Cyriacus the point merely denotes the division of words. As Cyriacus sometimes repeats a few letters, or mixes up two readings, I rather imagine that we should correct ΕΠΙΔΑ ΙΟΡΓΟΥ (or ΔΑΜΙΟΥΡΓΟΥ) ΝΙΚΑΝΔΡΙΔΑ. In the Hermionensian decree first published by Gori, Inscr. Donian. p. 136. we have ΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΟΥΣ. In Monum. Kempiana, p. 45. No. 39. instead of ▲AMOYYIOY I am inclined to try ΔΑΜΙΟΥΡΓΟΥ. Dr. Fiott Lee presented to the University an inscription which is curious in several respects. It is on the convex side of a meniscus of marble, about a foot broad, and had been brought from Egypt, but evidently

We may perhaps read it something this way: Θεὸς τύχαν· ̓Αριστοδάμας, δεκάτας . . . χιδῶν, (of the tribe, district, &c. of the ... chida, possibly Bacchiada, Herodot. V. 92. p. 419.) δίδωτι [τῷ συγγενεῖ] Πολυτίμῳ father's name dropt] αἴ κα τι πάσχῃ, τὰν γᾶν τὴν ἐν Κνισι . . . Επακολουθεῖ (or Ἐπάκοος) ̓Αριστοδάμαντι Δαμουχίδας Εὐκλείδα, Πολυτίμῳ Φιλωνίδας Αἰσχύλου. It may be better to divide the words, Δεκάτα, Σ... χιδῶν. Both names are suspicious. Qu. Μαχάτα Σιμιχίδων? I may add that δίδωμι is the word used in the fa mous will of Epicteta, Gruter p. 216. or Maffei Mus. Veron. p. 14. (and ἐπιδέδωκε in line 113.) It occurs repeatedly in Isæus in the sense of bequeathing.

belongs to some Peloponnesian or at least Dorian State, perhaps Corcyra. Compare Montfaucon's Diarium Italicum, p. 422. No. 2. where read ΠΡΥΤΑΝΕΥΣΑΣ, and p. 426. No. 18. See also p. 422. No. 5. and Maffei Mus. Veron. pp. 40—42.

This seems to be part of a catalogue of sacred vessels. In line 4, we may read ΕΚΠΩΜΑΤΑ, and in line 5, [ΕΝ ΤΩΙ]...... ΤΕΘΗ (whether this be ἐτέθη or τεθῇ) ΘΗΣΑΥ ΡΩΙ. At the end, Γαῖος Κλαύδιος.]
