"It was found in the ruins of the old city of Tenos about the year 1795. The allusion to the piracies committed in those seas shows what has been the fate of the Greek Islands in all ages, and particularly of those which lay in the line of communication between the commercial states of Greece." Mr. Hawkins. A marble found in the Troad, and now in our Public Library, contains an inscription in honor of a Roman functionary, who had "cleared the Hellespont of pirates, and preserved the city unburthened,” καθελόντα τὰ ἐν ̔Ελλησπόντῳ ληστήρια, καὶ-ἀνε #Báρηтov puλážavтa Thu TóλIV. Clarke, Camb. Marbles, No. XXI. explains avеπißáρnтov," without imposing any additional taxes." The Tenian decree shows that the meaning is," kept it from being burthened with contributions levied by the pirates, and with debts contracted in consequence of them."

Besides Mr. Reuvens's copy, and one in the Porson papers, which is by an unknown hand, and ends line 48, I have been favored by the Rev. Dr. Ramsden, late Senior and Deputy Professor of Divinity, with his own copy, and with one made by Mr. Davies, formerly Senior. These papers, especially Dr. Ramsden's, have been highly useful; but after line 47, the marble is so corroded and discolored, especially towards the end of the lines, that many words must be left uncertain.

Line 3. The marble has KAOIAIAN. It is remarkable that this very fault occurs in another Tenian decree. See p. 286. note. Line 10. EYNHAAXOTON with one A. Line ΣΥΝΗΛΑΧΟΤΩΝ 27. and 54. ATON for AYTON, and this itself wrong in the former place.

Line 25. IAKYΣEN. The other copies fluctuate between this and IAPYZEN, which is a very ingenious emendation, and may have been written by the author of the decree; but the stone has IAKYZEN, i. e. Axurev. By a contrary mistake, TEINOMENAΣ line 31, HMEI[N] 44, and, it may be, KATEIAIAN 48, and KAOEIKOMENOZ 51. But in 48, it may be a doubt whether we should not read xar'sλŋy in their several companies, Latin, collegia. (xarà eλas Herodot. I. 202.) As to the very difficult passage in the 24th and following lines, érov is also the supplement of Dr. Ramsden. Assuming gurev, ἵδρυσεν, and supposing a number to have been omitted before erov, we may translate; and to the other debts, making a fresh score

from the date of the (new) bonds, he fixed the interest at a drachma, (per mina per month, equal to our twelve per cent. per annum) at simple interest, (and with a respite of) .... years and more.

Line 47. The other copies have ΗΜΩΝ for «ΗΛΟΙ. Either ΗΛΟ» or «ΗΛΩ» seems certain. Dr. Ramsden's copy proceeds thus ;

"Aufidius Bassus in M. A. Seneca Suasor. VI. is probably father of Aufidius Bassus in L. A. Seneca Epist. xxx. The father seems to be mentioned as an author by Pliny, Epist. 111. 5. The sixth satire of Persius, against covetousness, is addressed to Bassus. What evidence is there of this being Casius Bas

sus, as said in the notes? No evidence in the satire. It would suit A. Bassus the son, or some of his descendants inheriting his. liberal mind. See line 67." Dr. Ramsden.

No. IX. The imperfect letters AС, over ПAÑIAC at the side of the stone, are evidently the remains of ПАПIАС first. put a little too high, and then meant to be effaced, when the graver had put the word in the proper place. The bar between ПАПIАС and ПACIKPATOYC is so in the original, and evidently from design.

Nos. X. and XI. Published in Maffei, Mus. Vercn. pp. 316. 443. In the former, he has tacitly corrected the blunders KACIA AOEACOCIC, and META. In verse 2 he puts ΑΞΙΟ for ΑΞΙω. No. XI. was seen by him in Lord Oxf ford's collection at Wimple, and is printed as if imperfect at the beginning, which is not the case. The notch at the bottom apparently received the water-pipe. The characters are very like those engraved in Mus. Veron. p. 41.

I had intended to subjoin a selection of inscriptions from the papers of my amiable and well-informed relation Mr. E. Tupper; but on examination it appears, that every thing of any importance has been anticipated by Clarke, Dodwell, Walpole, or others, except a long decree of thanks by the people of Salamis to Theodotus, son of Eustrophus, gymnasiarch; and several from Carthæa. The former was taken by my friend from so bad a copy, that till something more is known, it would hardly be proper to print it. The latter are, or will be published, by Messrs. Linckh and Brondstedt.

The boustrophedon p. 21. was not seen by Mr. Tupper himself, but communicated to him with about thirty more, by Rebelakes, an Athenian, who gives no account of the original, except that it was una placa di marmo. I cannot help suspecting that instead of ΗΟΔΟΙ the stone has ΗΟΔΟ: i. e. ὁδοῦ. Respecting the other, p. 325, I am enabled by the kindness of Mr. W. J. Bankes, to give you some information. That gentleman saw a stone at Agio Sarandi, resembling Mr. Tupper's, i. e. Gropius's drawing, and with characters upon it apparently ancient: but this was in the dusk of the evening, and he could not see to read them. He does not remember to have heard any thing which would warrant a suspicion of forgery against Gropius. The reading of the latter part is deplorably uncertain. Perhaps, VOL. XXX. ⚫ Cl. Jl. NO. LIX.

Dear Rose,

TRIN. COLL. May 10, 1824.

Most of the above inscriptions were copied towards the end of 1819, by Professor Reuvens of Leyden. His transcript, which had been made in a few hours, and under every disadvantage, was left with me to be compared with the originals and then printed. I have put dots under the imperfect or indistinct letters, and placed within brackets those which are absolutely uncertain. Where I hesitate between two or more, I have put the more probable in the line, and the others above.

No. 1. See Class V. Inscr. I. p. 313.

No. II. was brought from Athens by the Rev. H. V. Elliott and the Rev. E. B. Elliott, Fellows of the College, See the engraving, Tab. LIII. The name Euthycritus occurs in Lysias, c. Pancleonen, and among the Archons, Olymp. exii. 1. No. III. Engraved in Ainsworth's Monumenta Vetustatis Kempiana, Part I. p. 43. and thence copied by Muratori, p. 1089. Chishull, p. 164. republished it from the marble, then in the possession of Lord Oxford. Both Ainsworth and Chishull omit the first line, the letters of which, though imperfect, are certain enough, except ΤΩΝ ΙΕΡΩΙ. The sentence was something of this kiud; Chishull omits ΤΗΝ before ΕΞΑΓΩΓΗΝ line 7.
