The words with their sound are a prepositional phrase of means. Their combination with echo has just been shown. For further analysis they may

be written thus:

NOTE. The mark [[] which we have used to indicate the combination of subject and predicate, may be shortened to a straight line; that for the adverbial combination may be simplified into a plane angle [<]. For example, the four syntactical combinations may be marked as in the following sentence:

If it be thought desirable to retain in the column the original order of the words, a deviation from the order which we have adopted in the rules on page 420 may be indicated by placing on the right hand the marks that indicate syntactical combinations.
