PUBLISHER'S NOTE

The requirements in English for entrance into nearly all the colleges in this country are uniform, and embrace familiarity on the part of the student with certain works of standard authors.

These works are divided into two groups, one for careful study, the other for reading merely.

The works composing the first group, those prescribed for careful study of subject-matter, form, and structure, are identical for the years 1901-1905, inclusive. They are five in number, and are collected into the present volume for the convenience of students preparing in English.

These works may also be obtained singly as separate volumes of the Eclectic English Classics, which series also includes all, or nearly all, the longer list of works composing the second group, which are prescribed for reading merely.
