ver. 22.

VER. 31.

Ἐῤῥέθη δὲ ὅτι ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα

αὑτοῦ δότω αὐτῇ ἀποστάσιον.

It hath been said, a Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

a They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? Matt. xix. 7. When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house, Deut. xxiv. i. And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away Mark. x. 2-4.

VER. 32.

But a I say unto you, That whoso ever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

a See parallels on clause 1, ver. 22. b He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whomsoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso mar

Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away, Mal. ii. 15, 16. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept: But from made them male and female. For the beginning of the creation God

this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter. And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery, Mark x. 5—12. Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband, committeth adultery, Luke xvi. 18. For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to she shall be called an

adulteress but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law ; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man, Rom. vii. 2, 3. And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife, 1 Cor. vii. 10, 11.

the wicked shall no more pass through
thee; he is utterly cut off, Nah. i. 15.

Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. Ye fools and blind for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. And whoso shail swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon, Matt. xxiii. 16-22. My brethren, these things ought not so to be, James iii. 10.

And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other, Luke vi. 29. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? xxii. 64. For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffetted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him who judgeth righteously, 1 Pet. ii. 19-23.
