WITHOUT me ye can do nothing.

JOHN XV. 5.

THE prayers I make will then be sweet indeed
If thou the spirit give by which I pray :
My unassisted heart is barren clay,

That of itself can nothing feed:

Of good and pious works thou art the seed,
That quickens only where thou sayest it may:
Unless thou show to us thy own true way,
No man can find it: Father, thou must lead.
WM. WORDSWORTH.

LORD, we beseech thee let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without thy succor, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

LET the words of my mouth, and the meditation
of my heart, be always acceptable in thy sight,
O Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer.
PSALM xix. 14.

As from the bowed-down branches of the trees
Snow in the sunshine melteth by degrees,
Leaving them free to rise

Once more towards the skies,

So in the brightness of thy glance divine
May sin melt swiftly from this soul of mine.

GIVE strength, O Lord, to those who seek thee, and continually pour into their souls the holy desire of seeking thee, that they who long to see thy face may not crave the world's pernicious pleasure: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DEAL courageously, and the Lord shall be with

the good.

2 CHRON. xix. II.

IF thou love him,

Walking truly in his ways,

Then no trouble, cross, or death,
Shakes thy heart or quells thy praise:
All things serve thee here beneath,
If thou love God.

AUSTEN ULRICH, 1667.

GRANT us, O Lord, we pray thee, to trust in thee

with all our heart: seeing that thou dost not forsake those who make their boast of thy mercy: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR even hereunto were ye called: because

Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an exam

ple, that ye should follow his steps.

I PETER ii. 21.

THIS world is drear

Until we realize

That thou were here,

And one of us.

Lord Jesus, thus

Thy presence sanctifies,

With all its sorrow and its strife,
Our human life.

JESUS, who didst will to assume our lowly flesh, that thou mightest leave to us an example of humility, and make us steadfast in all manner of sufferings, make us to follow thee in all things, for thine own Name's sake. Amen.

FOR what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth JAMES iv. 14.

away.

'T is not for man to trifle life is brief,

And sin is here.

Our age is but the falling of a leaf

A dropping tear.

We have no time to sport away the hours,
All must be earnest in a world like ours.

BONAR.

ALMIGHTY GOD, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
