HE was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. ISAIAH liii. 5.

THOU art a gentle and most loving Lamb,
Wounded to give us balm;

And still wherever sin doth reign

Thou day by day art slain.

When will man cease to give thee pain?

A. E. HAMILTON.

LAMB of God, who takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace! O Lamb of God who takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us.

Amen.

WHOM have I in heaven but thee? and there is

none upon earth that I desire besides thee.

PSALM lxxiii. 25.

[blocks in formation]

MOST sweet Jesus Christ, we, unworthy sinners, yet redeemed by thy precious blood, call to memory all the good works thou wroughtest on earth for our salvation, and beseech thee to make us truly grateful unto thee, for thine own Name's sake. Amen.

FOR God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together. I THESS. V. 9, 10, II.

DEATH Comes to set thee free:
Oh, meet him cheerily

As thy true friend:

And all thy fears shall cease,

And in eternal peace

Thy penance end.

FOUQUE.

BE thou, O Jesus, our mediator and advocate with the Father. Deal mercifully with us in the last hour of our lives: be gracious unto us sinners, for into thy hands, O Lord, we would commend our spirits. Amen.

IF

we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

FATHER! with contrite grief

I JOHN i. 9.

And bitterness of heart we must confess
How much our good is mingled,

Its best and greatest, with sin's littleness,
Our eye how little singled

Sunlight and shadow on the self-same leaf.

A. E. H.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, we have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. Spare thou those, O God, who confess their faults: restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

THEREFORE are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. REV. vii. 15.

JERUSALEM! Jerusalem!
It is not to behold

The glory of thy jasper walls,
Thy streets of purest gold!

But oh, than all thy streets can boast,
My eager eyes would see,

Jesus, the precious Lamb of God,

Who died to ransom me!

GEORGE H. HOUGHTON.

COME, blessed Spirit, and reveal to my soul the exceeding great power and beauty of heavenly things. Teach me to love them above the passing things of earth, and show me how I may attain to them forever, for the blessed Saviour's sake. Amen.
