THEY that wait on the Lord shall renew their ISAIAH xl. 31.

strength.

MAN's weakness waiting upon God

Its end can never miss,

For men on earth no work can do

More angel-like than this.

Ill that he blesses is our good,

And unblest good is ill;

And all is right that seems most wrong

If it be his sweet will!

FABER.

ALMIGHTY GOD, who seest that we have no power

of ourselves to help ourselves; keep us, both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls, we beseech thee, for Christ's sake. Amen.

LET this mind be in you, which was also in
Christ Jesus.
PHIL. ii. 5.

TAKE thy whole portion with thy Master's mind,
Toil, hindrance, hardness, with his virtue take,
And think how short a time thy heart may find
To labor or to suffer for his sake.

And love shall teach us, while on him we lean,
That in the certainty of coming bliss,
We may be yearning for a world unseen,
Yet wear our beautiful array in this.

A. L. WARING.

DEFEND us, O Lord, from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I

WILL be with him in trouble.

PSALM Xci. 15.

IT may be the bitter future
Is less bitter than I think;
The Lord may sweeten the waters
Before I come to drink;

Or, if Marah must be Marah,

He will stand beside the brink.

M. J. BRAINerd.

IN thy compassion, O Lord, turn away from us those chastenings which indeed we deserve for our sins, but which in our human frailty we cannot endure, and embrace us with that tenderness thou dost bestow even on the unworthy; for Christ's sake. Amen.

AND to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

REV. xix. 8.

As these white robes are soiled and dark

To yonder snowy ground;

As this pale taper's earthly spark,

To yonder argent round;

So shows my soul before the Lamb,
My spirit before thee;

So in my earthly house I am

To that I hope to be.

ALFRED TENNYSON.

MY soul hangs on thee, O Christ, alone; it thirsts for thee, and till it arrives at the enjoyment of thee, it

will still be waiting. Amen.

I HAVE heard thy prayer, I have seen thy ISAIAH XXXviii. 5.

tears.

EVEN here,

From his dear children's eyes, God wipes the tear;
And who would mourn, a tear should fill his eye
For God to dry;

Angels might envy man his tearful eyes

When God's hand dries.

ET thy merciful clemency, O Lord, be unto thy servants, to heal our wounds, to forgive our sins, and at last to give us happy entrance into the joys of paradise. We ask it for Jesus' sake. Amen.
