NOW there was leaning on Jesus' bosom, one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

JOHN Xiii. 23.

AND evermore beside him on his way
The unseen Christ shall move,

That he may lean upon his arm and say,
Dost thou, dear Lord, approve?"

[ocr errors]

O holy trust! O endless sense of rest!
Like the beloved John,

To lay his head upon the Saviour's breast

And thus to journey on.

LONGFELLOW.

THOU good Shepherd, let me trust in thy love and feel thy supports, that whatever lies before me to be done or suffered, I may be enabled to do thy will, for thy blessed Name's sake. Amen.

OUT of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou

hast perfected praise.

MATT. xxi. 16.

THESE little ones whom we despise,

These are the saints whom God doth canonize;
Yea, humble names we know not or forget,
High in the calendar of heaven are set.

Not lifted eyes,

But contrite hearts, find favor in the skies.

A. E. H.

MAKE me, O Lord, to have faith as a little child, that so by the innocency of my life, and constancy of my faith even unto death, I may ever glorify thee, through Christ my Lord. Amen.

AND the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth. JOHN i. 14.

FOR wisdom dealt with mortal powers,
Where truth in closest words shall fail,
When truth embodied in a tale,

Shall enter in at lowly doors.

And so the word had breath, and wrought
With human hands the creed of creeds,
In loveliness of perfect deeds,

More strong than all poetic thought.

TENNYSON.

GRANT, O God, that as we are bathed in the light of the incarnate Word, that which shines by faith in our minds may blaze out likewise in our actions, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THOU shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

MATT. i. 21.

I KNOW thee, Saviour, who thou art,
Jesus, the feeble sinner's friend;
Nor wilt thou with the night depart,
But stay and love me to the end:
Thy mercies never shall remove;
Thy nature and thy name is love.

CHARLES Wesley.

DESPISE me not, O gracious Saviour, since I humbly

entreat thee, and call upon thy most holy name of Jesus. Thy name is a saving name, a precious name, for it means that thou art my Saviour, and will redeem me by thy precious blood, from all my sins. To thee be the glory. Amen.

JESUS CHRIST the same yesterday, and to-day,

and forever.

HEB. xiii. 8.

O CHRIST! eternal are thy human years.
Brief in their space,

Eternal in their grace;

In them for us God still doth live and move,
The God of love,

Wearing our flesh, in sorrow and in tears.

A. E. H

LORD JESUS CHRIST, very God and very man, my Creator and Redeemer, thee I desire to love above all things; pour upon me the riches of thy grace, that I may live holily, and serve thee perfectly to the end and to thee, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, be glory forever. Amen.
