BELOVED, let us love one another: for love is I JOHN iv. 7.

of God.

FOR love is not a soulless clod: living, perfected it shall rise

Transfigured in the light of God, and giving glory to the

skies;

And that which makes this life so sweet
Shall render heaven's joy complete.

A. A. PROCTER.

[ocr errors]

GOD of love, grant us the spirit of peace and grace, that thy universal family may be both devoted to thee with their whole heart, and united to each other with a pure will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

AND this I pray,

abound

that your love may more and more in knowledge and in all judgthat ye may be sincere and without

ment;

offence till the day of Christ.

PHIL. i. 9, 10.

IT is not the deed we do
Though the deed be never so fair,

But the love that the dear Lord looketh for,
Hidden with holy care

In the heart of the deed so fair.

CLEANSE us, O Lord our God, from all our sins, se

cret and open, and from every thought displeasing to thy goodness; cleanse our bodies and souls, our hearts and consciences, that with a pure heart and a clear soul, with perfect love and calm hope, we may venture confidently and fearlessly to pray unto thee, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

MASTER, I will follow thee whithersoever thou

goest.

But the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. MATT. viii. 19, 20.

How can we e'er forget our Lord,
Who had not where to lay his head?
Homeless in all this world of homes,
A hungered, he, the Living Bread!
Father! forgive our halting step,

So laggard on the upward road:
And grant that each returning day
May bring us nearer thine abode.

M. K. A. S.

THOU knowest, Lord, how much we boast our willingness to follow thee, and yet when thou callest us to any trial of the flesh or spirit, we mourn and lament. Strengthen us to a real following of thee, O merciful Saviour, that in body and soul we may cheerfully accomplish thy gracious will, for thine own Name's sake. Amen.

YE are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are I COR. vi. 20.

God's.

"Not your own!" To him ye owe
All your life and all your love;
Live, that ye his praise may show,
Who is yet all praise above.

Every day and every hour,
Every gift and every power,
Consecrate to him alone,

Who hath claimed you for his own.

GOD, help me ever to seek thy face with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind: to prefer nothing to thy love, and to serve thee truly all the days of my life. I ask it for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

THE next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

WHERE is the love the Baptist taught,

JOHN i. 29.

The soul unswerving, and the fearless tongue ?
The much-enduring wisdom sought

By lonely prayer the haunted rocks among?
Who counts it gain

His light should wane,

So the whole world to Jesus throng?

Keble.

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that the example of thy servant may incite us to a better life. May we imitate his actions, and ever be seeking to lead others to repentance, by showing to them Jesus, the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world. We ask it for Christ's sake. Amen.
