HE that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

MATT. X. 39.

TEACH us, master, how to give
All we have and are to thee;
Grant us, Saviour, while we live,
Wholly, only thine to be.
Henceforth be our calling high
Thee to serve and glorify;
Ours no longer, but thine own,
Thine forever, thine alone.

F. R. HAVERGAL.

GRANT, O merciful God, that without delay we may

be obedient unto the calling of thy Son Jesus Christ and follow him; that, forsaking all worldly and carnal affections, we may be evermore ready to follow thy holy commandments, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THOUGH the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction,

thine ears shall hear a word behind_thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it. ISAIAH XXX. 20, 21.

OH, sacred sorrow! by whom souls are tried,
Sent not to punish mortals, but to guide;
If thou art mine (and who shall proudly dare
To tell his maker, he has had a share !),
Still let me feel for what thy pangs are sent,
And be my guide, and not my punishment.

G. CRABBE.

LORD, we would accept our trials simply from thy fatherly hands; entirely resigning ourselves to thy blessed will, in all the sorrows that encompass our pilgrimage. Be thou our guide and our redeemer, O holy Jesus. Amen.

THE Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

PSALM cxlv. 18.

WHY therefore should we do ourselves this wrong,
Or others, that we are not always strong,

That we are ever overborne with care,

That we should ever weak or heartless be,
Anxious or troubled, when with us is prayer,
And joy and strength and courage are with thee.

TRENCH.

ALMIGHTY GOD, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking; we beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things, which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us, for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THY knowledge of us makes thy pity most deep :
Our knowledge of thee bids us trust while we weep:
For it is when we weep we are often most still:
They who mourn most, keep often most close to thy will.

FABER.

MERCIFUL Lord, the comforter of all thy faithful people, confirm, we pray thee, the hearts of those who hope in thee, by enabling them to understand the depth of thy promises that we may all behold with the eye of faith the light which as yet thou dost not openly manifest; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Now thank we all our God

With heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things hath done,
In whom his world rejoices:
Who from our mother's arms
Hath blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours to-day.

M. RINKART, 1644.

THOU art almighty, all-wise, all-good, O Lord. We

would believe in thee and love thee in deed and in truth, forever. Thou art all truth, and all goodness. We would praise and magnify thee, through Jesus, world without end.

Amen.
