JESUS answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. JOHN i. 50.

THE child-like faith, that asks not sight,
Waits not for wonder or for sign,
Believes, because it loves, aright,

Shall see things greater, things divine.

Heaven to that gaze shall open wide,
And brightest angels to and fro,

On messages of love shall glide,
'Twixt God above, and Christ below.

Keble.

HOLY SPIRIT, possess my heart, incline it to a true faith in thee, to a holy love of thee, my God, that with my whole soul I may seek thee, and find thee my best, my truest joy. I ask it for Jesus' sake. Amen.

I WOULD have you without carefulness.
I COR. vii. 32.

No anxious thought upon my brow
The watching world should see,
No carefulness, oh, child of God
For nothing careful be;

But cast thou all thy care on him
Who always cares for thee.

F. R. HAVERGAL.

MERCIFULLY regard, O Lord, the prayers of thy family, and while they submit themselves to thee with their whole heart, do thou prosper, support, encompass them; that relying on thee as their guide, they may be entangled in no evils, but be replenished with all good through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I WILL lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

PSALM CXXI. 1, 2.

BLEST is the faith divine and strong,
Of thanks and praise an endless fountain,
Whose life is one perpetual song,

High up the Saviour's holy mountain.

Blest is the hope that holds to God
In doubt and darkness still unshaken,
And sings along the heavenly road,

Sweetest when most it seems forsaken.

FABER.

WE beseech thee, O Christ, continually to strengthen us by a sincere faith in thee, and grant that we may not lay the foundations of our faith on the sand where the whirlwind may overthrow them, but be established on the rock which is steadfast in thee. Amen.

SOW to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. HOSEA X. 12.

THE lines are sorrow, pain, and loss,
Blotted and black they run across
My life yet read I in between,
"Before the harvest e'er is seen,

God sendeth showers of heavy rain
To wash the ways out, soak the earth,
That flowers and fruit may come to birth,
And valleys laugh with grain!

GRANT, O merciful. Saviour, that while I follow thee along this way of sorrow, my heart may be so touched with true contrition, that I may be willing to accept cheerfully for thy sake, all the suffering and humiliations of this my pilgrimage on earth: for Christ's

THERE shall no evil befall thee; for he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee PSALM Xci. 10, II.

in all thy ways.

GOD shall charge his angel legions
Watch and ward o'er thee to keep :
Though thou walk through hostile regions,
Though in desert wilds thou sleep.

Since with pure and firm affection,
Thou on God hast set thy love,
With the wings of his protection,
He will shield thee from above.

JAMES MONTGOMERY.

GOD, who vouchsafest to send thy holy angels to have a charge over us: grant that we, thy humble servants, may both be evermore defended by their protection, and also rejoice in their eternal companionship hereafter, with thee, O Christ, the king of glory, for whose sake we offer up our imperfect prayers. Amen.
