the other the savour of life unto life; and who is sufficient for these things? 2 Cor. ii, 15. But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost, in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them who believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them; 2 Cor. iv, 3, 4. For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward, how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation? Heb. ii, 2.

II. The everlasting gospel. Its Author was long since known by the name of Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come; the Almighty, that liveth, and was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore. Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. The gospel, like its Author, is immutable. It is not like human institutions and systems, ever subject to change and variation, but is the faithful, true, and everlasting witness, the Word of the Lord, which endureth for ever, the everlasting gospel. Its results are everlasting. He that believeth and is baptized, and endureth to the end, shall have a crown of life, and shall be saved for ever; and he that believeth not shall perish everlastingly. When the Son of Man cometh in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory; and be fore Him shall be gathered all nations; and when He shall pronounce the sentence, the condemned shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal. It is infinite; probably not confined to the narrow sphere of this terraqueous globe. Christ is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that in all things He might have the pre-eminence; for it pleased the Father that in Him should all fulness dwell; and having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself; by Him, I say, whether they be things in earth or things in heaven; Col. i, 20. Here is peace made by Him to reconcile all things— things in heaven as well as things in earth; yea, all

things in Christ. Who can fully comprehend the whole fulness and extent of the everlasting gospel?

III. Its promulgation. It was first made known to fallen man, very obscurely, under the figure of "the seed of the woman." It was afterwards more fully revealed to Abraham. The Scriptures, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham; Gal. iii, 8, saying,-"In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed." Light increased throughout the Jewish dispensation by their types, sacrifices, and prophets; but the law, having only a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, could not make the comers thereunto perfect; but when the fulness of time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman-made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And then came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying," Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand; behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." And after John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying,-"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent ye, and believe the gospel." Then Jesus sent the twelve forth into Judea; and that they might feel their dependence upon Him, and not upon money and power, He sent them friendless, penniless, and defenceless; He sent them two and two, and said,- "Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel; provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, nor scrip for your journey; neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves, for the workman is worthy of his meat." And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere. After this He sent other seventy forth with the same instructions, And finally, after His resurrection, He gave the great commission:-"Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day, and

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, and the apostles were filled with the Holy Ghost, they did begin at Jerusalem; and then went forth and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the Word with signs following; and this has continued with more or less energy to the present time; and now the angel is flying through the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to all the dwellers upon earth.

A FRUITFUL EVERGREEN.

PSALM 1, 3.

"His leaf also shall not wither."

THE Psalms contain so much of Christ and His gospel, as well as of Jehovah and His law, that they have been called the summary of both Testaments. They treat of the formation of the world, the mysteries of Providence, and the economy of grace. They predict the advent of the Messiah, with its effects and conse quences; His incarnation, birth, life, passion, death, resurrection, ascension, kingdom, and priesthood; the effusion of the Spirit; the subjection of the nations; the rejection, and ultimate gathering of the Jews; the es tablishment, increase, and perpetuity of the Christian church; the end of the world, and the judgment of the great day.

They are adapted to all persons and ages, to all employments, conditions, and circumstances of life, whether of honour or dishonour, prosperity or adversity, health
