of machinery and manufactures being so great, it is impossible in these pages to do more than touch on a few kinds, but most of the hints being general and not arbitrary they may be modified as circumstances may dictate. The author trusts that what he has written may be found of some use by those who intend erecting machinery or who have it already in operation.

STEAM AND MACHINERY MANAGEMENT.

CHAPTER I.

MANAGEMENT OF STEAM ENGINES AND BOILERS. THE subject on which the author is about to write being a very wide one, within the scope of these pages it will be impossible for him to go into minute details; but he trusts the information he may give-deduced as it largely is from his own experience-may be of service to those steam and machinery users into whose hands the book may fall; at the same time, as it is imposible to make rules or give instructions that will suit exactly every individual case, the author desires it to be understood that the instructions given are to be considered general and not arbitrary.

In erecting engines and machinery, we need hardly say it is of the utmost importance that those selected are exactly suited to the user's requirements. These are points often neglected, the result being unsatisfactory in many cases, both as regards first cost, economy of working, and output. And here let me remark on the false economy of purchasing the so-called "cheap" machinery with which, owing to excessive competition, the market is now flooded, as it will be found the difference in first cost between good and cheap machinery is rapidly counterbalanced by
