PREFACE.

THE subjects presented and discussed in this little work, are those which in times past occupied the minds and pens of the wisest and best of men, whose counsel, as it appears to the author, has been so long neglected, and so darkened, that to revive those subjects is a great and urgent duty.

It would neither accord with his judgment nor his feelings, to say, "there is anything new;" but it is truth only to state, that what is written has been thought out for himself, and is expressed in his own way; and that if anything seem a novelty to the reader, it will be accounted for thereby, or else that he has to search for the good old truths which are thus presented to his mind.

One whose convictions are deep and vivid, is apt to convey his thoughts in plain and forcible terms. "He believes, and therefore speaks" with energy and boldness, and without fear. In this case, however, the intention of speaking at all is rather to commend some of those truths, which are deemed to be essential to the welfare of the Church in general, and each member
