THE reader of this little book, who has seen my work on "the Restoration of the Jews," will not be surprised that I should willingly comply with the request of the Publisher to prefix some remarks to this Discourse. I the more readily concurred, as he kindly agreed to apply the profits of this publication, as well as that entitled "Geneva and Rome," to the Foreign Aid Society. Thankful shall I be if any influence which God may have given me is blessed of Him to promote the truths set forth in these little works of the excellent Mons. Gaussen, or the interests of a society like the Foreign Aid Society, so full of blessing to the Protestant Churches abroad. These Churches now greatly need the aid of British Christians. My friends M. Gaussen and Merle D'Aubigne being specially connected with these evangelical efforts, it is due to them thus to appropriate the profits of these publications It is very gratifying that our brethren on the Continent are thus strengthening our hands against Rome and for Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a most interesting ground of union. The pious wish of the King of Prussia, when aiding the Protestant bishoprick of Jerusalem, that the churches of the Reformation might bury their differences and be come united over the tomb of the Saviour at Jerusalem, will, we trust, be abundantly realised. The remarks of our beloved brother Gaussen here are peculiarly beautiful and refreshing on this most interesting subject. Such blessed effects are likely to be connected with a growing interest in the welfare of Israel. It is delightful to see that when the decree of the Inquisition was going forth against the Jews at Ancona, and the edict of the Emperor of Russia is troubling them on the frontiers of Russia and Poland, God is stirring up his faithful witnesses in the Protestant Churches to show love to them and labour for their salvation: These efforts of his spiritual church for the good of Israel will undoubtedly be richly attended with blessings. They will lead Christians at large to a more careful investigation of the sure word of prophecy, and an enlarged knowledge of the gracious purposes of God respect ing Israel and his church. These studies will open the way to that state of mind, so much insisted upon in the New Testament as the character and duty of believers, looking for that blessed hope the appearance in glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, and waiting for his coming from heaven. As this hope revives, Christians will be turned from the lesser things in which they may differ, to the far greater things in which they have come to an agreement, and so become more and more united in one heart and one mind. Sure we are the promise is already fulfilling to those who follow the divine direction-Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; they shall prosper that love thee. We cannot labour in faith and love for the good of the Jews without a present and an abundant recompense; and we are sowing at the same time the seed of a large and full harvest to be reaped hereafter. May British Christians more and more rejoice to cast their energies, their wealth, their influence, and their resources, into those blessed works of united love on which the religious societies of Britain have now so widely entered both at home and abroad; both for Jews and for Gentiles.
