UNIVERSIDAD COMPLUTENSE 5325866807 b23301414 135446511 PRINTED BY HARRISON AND SONS, LONDON GAZETTE OFFICE, ST. MARTIN'S LANE. The NOTICE. IN consequence of the amount of additional illustration which has been found requisite, to bring Gibbon's great work to the present state of historical knowlege, the original limits assigned to this edition have proved inadequate. The Notes are nearly doubled, and the reader who turns to any of the more celebrated chapters, for instance to XLIV (on ROMAN LAW), will have evidence as well of their extent as of their intrinsic value. A seventh volume has therefore become unavoidable; but as the Text will only occupy about half the volume, scope will be left for an Index more circumstantial and complete than any heretofore published. Seeing these advantages it is hoped the Subscribers to BOHN'S BRITISH CLASSICS will find no cause to complain of the extension. York Street, December 28th, 1854. |
