And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice. Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live? Deut. v, 25, 26. Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die. For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the volca of the living God speaking out of the midst of tho fire, as we have, and lived? 1 Kings xix, 12. 13. And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave: and, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? by his understanding. Amos ix, 6. It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his troop in the waters of the sea, and poureth earth: The LORD is his name. then out upon the face of the Ps. lxvill, 33. To him that rideth heavens also, and came down; and earth; he that calleth for the upon the heavens of heavens, which were of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, and that a mighty voice. Jer. xxv, 30. Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. Ezek. x1, 6. And I heard him speaking unto me out of the house; and the man stood by me. Joel ii, 11. And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army... Joel iii, 16. The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem. Amos 1, 2. And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem. TOKENS OF THE DIVINE Deut. iv, 36. Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice,that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he showed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire. Deut. v, 24. And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath showed us his glory, and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that Gol doth talk with man, and he liveth. 2 Sam. xxii. 13. He made darkness his secret place, his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. V. WORKS OF GOD. 1.-CREATION. Gen. i, 1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Gen. ii, 4. These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. Ps. xxxiii, 6. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. Ps. cii, 25. Of old hast thou laid dom hath founded the earth; by Isa, xxxvii, 16. O LORD of hosts, Isa. xl, 28... The LORD, the fuinteth not. Isa. xlv, 18. For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens, earth, and made it; he hath estabGod himself that formed the lished it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else. hath laid the foundation of the Isa. xlviii, 13. Mine hand also earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together. Jer. x, 12. CREATION OF MAN. Gen. i, 26, 27. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image: in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Gen. ii, 7. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Gen. v, 1. This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him. Job xxxiii. 4. The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. Prov. xx, 12. The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath even made both of them. Isa. xlii, 5. But now, O LORD, thou art our Father: we are the clay, and thon our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. Jer. xxvii, 5. I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power, and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me. Zech. xii, 1. The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. II. PROVIDENCE. GOD IS PRESERVER. Gen. xlviii, 15. And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which Neh. ix, 6. Thou, even thou, art LORD alone, thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all. Job x, 12. Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit. Job xii, 10. In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. Job xxxiii, 18. He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. Ps. xxiii, 6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Ps. lxvi, 9. God is my strength, and power, and he mak eth my way perfect." Ps. ix, 9. The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Ps. xviii, 35. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. Ps. xlvi, 5, 11. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Ps. Ixi, 3. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. Ps. xci, 1-4. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge, and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Ps. cxxiv, 1-3. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say; If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us; Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us. Prov. xviii, 10. The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. Isa xli, 10. Fear thou not; for I am with thee; be not dismayed; for 1 thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Isa. xliii, 2. When thon passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, shall the flame kindle upon thee. thou shalt not be burnt; neither AND THEREFORE THE OBJECT OF TRUST. 2 Sam. xxii, 2, 3. And he said The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. Ps. vii, 10. My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart. Ps. xvi, 5. The LORD is the por tion of mine inheritance and of of my God, my King, in the sanc-upon the seas, and established it my cup: thou maintainest my lot. Ps. xxvii, 1.
