HOPE.

Job xi, 18. And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety. Prov. x, 28. The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

Prov. xii, 25. Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.

Prov. xiii, 12. Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of

life.

Rom. iv, 18. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

DESPAIR.

Num. xvii, 12. 13. And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish. Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die: shall we be consumed with dying?

Job xvii, 15. And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it?

REMEDY OF UNDUE SOLICITUDE.

Luke xii, 22, 23, 25-27. And he said, unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. And which of you, with taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon, in all his glory, was not arrayed like one of these.

Luke xii, 28-31. If then God so clothe the grass, which is to-day into the oven; how much more in the field, and to-morrow is cast will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. Rom. viii, 32. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

1 Tim. iv, 8. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

Heb. xii, 12, 13. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way: but let it rather be healed.

MURMURING.

Exod. xvi, 9. And Moses spake unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the LORD: for he hath heard your murmurings.

shall I bear with this evil congreNum. xiv, 27-29. How long gation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you: Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me.

Num. xvii, 10, 11. And the LORD said unto Moses, Bring Aaron's rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not. And Moses did so: as the LORD commanded him, so did he.

1 Cor. x, 10. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

out murmurings and disputings. Phil. ii, 14. Do all things with

Exod. xvi, 2, 3. And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. Num. xvi, 41. But on the mor

row all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying. Ye have killed the people of the LORD.

Num. xx, 2-4. And there was no water for the congregation, and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD! And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?

Num. xxi, 5. And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

Deut. i, 26, 27. Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God. And ye murmured in, your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

3.-RELATIVE EMOTIONS. VIRTUES AND VICES. ANGER.

Num. xxxi, 14. And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host......

Judges ix, 30. And when Zebul, the ruler of the city, heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his

anger was kindled.

1 Sam. xx, 34. So Jonathan arose from the table in flerce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

1 Sam. xxv, 17. Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his

household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.

Neh. v, 6. And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

Job xxxil, 3-5. Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job. Now Eliau had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he. When Elihu

REVENGE INSTANCED, but
FORBIDDEN.

Gen. 1, 15. And when Joseph's brethreu saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will cer tainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

Lev. xix, 18. Thou shalt not avenge nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people; but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

1 Sam. xxv, 30-35. And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel, That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself; but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid. And David said to Abigail Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand. 1 Kings xx, 42, 43. And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people. And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.

Prov. xx, 22. Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

have dealt by revenge, and have aken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old batred; Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant of the sea-coasts. And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.

Luke ix, 54, 55. And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said. Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. Rom. xii, 17-19. Recompense to Provide

no man evil for evil. things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay,

saith the LORD.

Eph. iv, 31. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil-speaking, be put away from you, with all malice.

1 Thess. v, 15. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

James v, 9. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the Judge standeth before the door.

1 John ii, 9, 10. .He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in

ENVY.

Job v, 2. For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

Job xxii. 19. The righteous see tt, and are glad; and the innocenters

Gal. v, 26. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

James iii, 14-16. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your Ps. xxxvii,1,2, 7, 8. Fret not thy-hearts, glory not, and lie not self because of evil doers, neither against the truth. This wisdom be thou envious against the work descendeth not from above, but of iniquity: For they shall is earthly, sensual, devilish. For soon be cut down like the grass, where envying and strife is, there and wither as the green herb. is confusion and every evil work. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in

his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

Ps. cxii, 10. The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt

HYPOCRISY EXPOSED. Job. xvii, 8. Upright men shall be astonied at this, and the innocent shall stir up himself against the hypocrite.

Matth. vi, 24. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one,

Isa. Iviii, 2. Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did right eousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.

Jer. ill, 10, 11. And yet for all this Ler treacherous sister Judah hath not turned uuto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD. And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.
