Excerpt from Metallic Structures: Corrosion and Fouling, and Their Prevention; A Practical Aid-Book to the Safety of Works in Iron and Steel, and of Ships; And to the Selection of Paints for Them

It should always be remembered that the preservation of a metallic structure is only second in importance to that of its design and erection, and, unless corrosion and fouling are prevented or repressed, the time must come when the original strength will be so impaired as to be dangerous.

Fouling is distinct in many of its features from that of corrosion, it has, therefore, been treated in Part II. Of this book, and much information will be found in it relating to the fouling and corrosion of ships, pile, bridge, promenade, and landing piers, pontoons, and similar works of construction, and anti-corrosive, and anti-corrosive and anti-fouling paints and compositions: products of very great influence in the preservation and protection from corrosion and fouling of metallic structures, whether submerged or unsubmerged.
