THE charming story of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia, was written in 1759 by Dr. Johnson, in order to pay the expenses incurred on the interment of his mother, and to defray some small debts she had left unpaid; the composition of the tale occupying a week. The number of editions of it that have been published are evidence of its enduring popularity. According to Boswell, it was sent to the press piecemeal, as it was written, without being read over by the author before placing it in the printer's hands. One hundred pounds was the price received for it, which, on its reaching a second edition, was increased by an additional twenty-five pounds. Speaking of it, Boswell says: "We cannot but wonder at the very low price which Dr. Johnson was content to receive for this admirable performance, which, though he had written nothing else, would have rendered his name immortal in the world of literature.
