the Onondagas arrived at Quebec, and
fummoned thofe Hurons who had engag-
ed to join them, to the performance of
their promife. They were incenfed, when
they understood that the Bear had followed
the Agniers, and intermingled threats with
their remonftrances. At length, Mr. Lau-
fon ventured to tell them, that they failed
in point of refpect to their father; that
part of the Hurons were difpofed to fol-
low them; but their wives and children
had been terrified by their arms: that it
was not in the garb of war they ought to

come in queft of friends and brethren; that if they had a mind to act in a regular manner, they would return to their own country; then the Hurons would perform the promise they had given, when they fhould no longer confider them as enemies; that in the mean time the Hurons, to fhew their fincerity, fhould give hoftages, and wait for them at Montreal. The deputies were pacified by this declaration, and being well feafted, returned to their own country, feemingly fatisfied with the fuccefs of their

negotiation. [To be continued.] Zich

Mr. JOHN GRIFFIN's Directions for entering the Port of PADSTOW.

T

THE port of Padflow being little known, though the only fafe one between the Land's end and Bidde. ford (I may fay Brifto! on the English fhore) and a harbour fomewhat difficult to enter with the wind from S. S. W. to N. N. W. with which winds fhipping can neither clear the land to the eastward or westward if they are once engaged with it, and nothing but a wild fhore lined with rocks, where it is next to impoffible to fave fhip or life, and where numbers of fhips and valuable cargoes have been loft, for want of a proper defcription of Padstow harbour, and fome rings and bolts being let into the clifis, which is bolted to, clofe to the land (or to the length of a boat's oar) on the ftarboard fhore coming in; as the channel is narrow, tho' a good depth of water, and where hips of 15 feet draught of water may ride with fafety, or lie on fhore in the mud. To prevent the deftruction that has often hap. pened, I have let in here three fub. flantial bolts and rings to the aforementioned clift and, whitewashed the fame feveral feet round the rings, as a guide to frangers to find them; and for fear a boat fhould not be able to land (which feldom happens) I have fixed the outer ring in a place where people may come down and receive a lead line thrown from the boat, by which a hawfer or cable may be hauled on fhore, and faftened to the rings.

The ftarboard fhore, which is very. high land, muft be kept close on board coming in, there being a fand called the Doom-bar not more than a cable

length from the land, when the rings are let in, fo that when you have tho: within the land, with the above wind, you are generally becalmed, and next flaw may take you back, by which veffels are often thrown on the Doombar, and loft. Now in ftanding into this harbour, amd particularly with an ebb tide, be fure to have your teakles on the boat with a hawfer in her, and a lead line--your anchors and cables clear, and as foon as you are shot within the land, and find way, if it be on the ebb, let go your have lost your you larboard anchor, if on the flood, your ftarboard; out boat, and afhore with your haw fer to the rings, and you are fafe. The rings are about 45 fathom alunder, and after being faft to one, run a warp to the other, and fo to the third, where lie till near high water, which, on fpring tides, you have inthe channel better than five fathom, and on the fand 14 or 15 feet. If need be, you may flip your cable with a buoy, that may be taken up by the boat when the veffel is got to the harbour of Cove, which is more than half a mile above that.

I intend to make a proper draught of this harbour, the islands adjoining, with depths of water, &c. I am, Sir, &c.

JOHN GRIFFIN.
