Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under 9 the shadow of my roof. And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a

worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 2 Tim. iii. 13.

6 Lot went out, &c.] And the man (of Gibeah), the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto "them" (the "Gibeathites"), Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this "man" ("the Levite") is come into mine house, do not this folly. Judges xix. 23.

7 I pray you, brethren, &c.] See verse 4. Thou shalt not lie with mankind; it is an abomination. Lev. xviii. 22. If a man lie with mankind, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall be put to death. Lev. xx. 13. There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel. Deut. xxiii. 17. See Judges xix. 23, at verse 6. Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the Lord hath given us (the recovered spoil from the Amalekites at Ziklag); for who will hearken unto you in this matter? 1 Sam. xxx. 23, 24. And (God) hath made of one blood all nations of men. Acts xvii. 26. Wherefore God also gave them (the Gentiles) up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves. Rom. i. 24. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Cor. vi. 9. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, in like manner giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth, for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude 7.

8 I have two daughters, &c.] And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my Lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief. Exod. xxxii. 22. And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again. Gen. xlii. 37. Behold now here is my daughter, a maiden, and his (the Levite's) concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you; but unto this man do not so vile a thing. Judges xix. 24. For he (Peter at the transfiguration) wist not what to say, for they were sore afraid. Mark ix. 6. For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory, why yet am I also judged as a sinner? And not rather (as we be slanderously reported, as some affirm that we say),

Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. Rom. iii. 8.

Therefore came they.] See com. chap. xviii. 5. And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon. Judges ix. 15. Is not this the fast that I have chosen? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor, that are cast out, to thy house? Isa. lviii. 6, 7.

9 Stand back.] And the Philistine (Goliath) said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. 1 Sam. xvii. 44. Now therefore know, and consider what thou (Abigail) wilt do; for evil is determined (said one of David's young men) against our master (Nabal), and against all his household; for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him. 1 Sam. xxv. 17. He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame, and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot: reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee; rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. Prov. ix. 7, 8. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou: these are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day. Isa. lxv. 2. 5. Thou (Judah) hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed. Jer. iii. 3. Were "they" ("the people of Judah") ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush; therefore they shall fall among them that fall; at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the Lord. Jer. vi. 15. and Jer. viii, 12. Give not that which holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again, and rend you. Matt, vii. 6.

This one fellow, &c.] See chap. xiii. 12 And he (the Hebrew) said (to Moses), Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? Exod. ii. 14. And the next day he (Moses) shewed himself to them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another? But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and judge over us? Wilt thou

judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into 10 the house to them, and shut to the door. And they smote the men 11 that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great so that they wearied themselves to find the door. And the 12 men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: For we will destroy this place, because 13 the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it. And Lot went out, and spake 14

kill me, as thou didst the Egyptian yesterday? Acts vii. 26, 27, 28. And (the Lord) delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds. 2 Pet. ii. 7, 8. And they pressed sore, &c.] And the Lord said, Behold the people, the people is one (who built Babel). And now nothing will be restrained from them (said God), which they have imagined to do. Gen. xi. 6. And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay, but thou shalt give it me now; and if not, I will take it by force. 1 Sam. ii. 16. A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil; but the fool rageth, and is confident. Prov. xiv. 16. Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man rather than a fool in his folly. Prov. xvii. 12. A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty, but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both. Prov. xxvii. 3. Yea, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart, while they live, and after that they go to the dead. Eccles. ix. 3. The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is mischievous madness. Eccles. x. 13. Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego: therefore he spake and commanded, that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated. Therefore because the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Dan. iii. 19. 22.

11 Blindness.] And when they (the Syrians) came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the Lord, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha. 2 Kings vi. 18. And now behold, the hand of the Lord is upon "thee" ("Elymas" the sorcerer), and thou shalt be blind (said Paul): and immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness, and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. Acts xiii. 11.

They wearied themselves, &c.] The labour

of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city. Eccles. x. 15. Thou art wearied in the greatness of thy way (Jerusalem); yet saidst thou not, There is no hope. Isa. lvii, 10. Why gaddest thou about so much (Judah) to change thy way? Jer. ii. 36.

12 Hast thou here any, &c.] And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark. Gen. vii. 1. Depart, pray you, from the tents of "these wicked men" ("Korah, Dathan, and Abiram"), and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins. Numb. xvi. 26. But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country (Jericho),Go into the harlot's (Rahab's) house, and bring out thence the woman and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her. And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel. Josh. vi. 22, 23. And they (Judah) shall be my people, and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them and of their children after them. Jer. xxxii. 38. And (God) delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked; for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing vexed his righteous soul from day. to day with their unlawful deeds. 2 Pet. ii. 7, 8.

Son in law, &c.] And Lot went out and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; escape for thy life, look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountains, haste thee, escape thither, &c. Gen. xix. 14. 17. 22. Come out of "her" ("Babylon") my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. Rev. xviii. 4.

13 The cry of them is waxen great, &c.] See chap. xiii. 13. and com. Behold the hire of the labourers which have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth, and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. James v. 4.

The Lord hath sent us, &c.] And God sent

unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place, for the Lord will destroy this city. But 15 he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. And when

an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the Lord stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. 1 Chron. xxi. 15, 16. The wicked and him that loveth violence (the Lord) hateth : upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire, and brimstone, and an horrible tempest; this shall be the portion of their cup. Ps. xi. 5, 6. Woe unto the wicked; it shall be ill with him, for the reward of his hands shall be given him. Isa. iii. 11. And am "I" (“Sennacherib”) come up without the Lord against this land (Judah) to destroy it? The Lord said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it. Isa. xxxvi. 10. Then the angel of the Lord went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand; and when they arose early in the morning, behold they were all dead corpses. Isa. xxxvii. 36. And the Lord said unto him (the man clothed with linen), Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. And to the "others" ("the five men") he (the glory of the Lord) said, in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: slay utterly old and young, both maids and little children, and women; but come not near any man upon whom is the mark, and begin at my sanctuary. Ezek. ix. 4, 5, 6. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity, and shall cast them into a furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matt. xiii. 41, 42. 49. 50. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote "him" ("Herod"), because he gave not God the glory; and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. Acts xii. 23. Why yet am I also judged as a sinner; and not rather (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise; for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin. Rom. iii. 8, 9. The angels which kept not their first estate, he (God) hath reserved in everlasting chains; even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication and going after strange

And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. The first went and poured out his vial upon the earth, &c.; and the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea, &c.; and the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of water, &c. &c; and the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun, &c.; and the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast, &c. &c.; and the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. Rev. xvi. l.

14 Which married, &c.] When his (Jesus') mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Matt. i. 18.

Up, get you out of this city.] See verse xvii. 22. Separate yourselves from among congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men ; and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins: Get you up from among this congregation (of Kerah, Dathan, and Abiram), that I may consume them as in a moment. Numb, xvi. 21. 26. 45. Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her ini quity, for this is the time of the Lord's vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence. Jer. li. 6. And as he was yet a coming the devil threw him (the lunatic) down, and tare him. Luke ix. 42. Come out of "her" ("Babylon"), my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues: therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine, and she shall be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. Rev. xviii. 4. 8.

As one that mocked.] And he that regarded not the word of the Lord, left his servants and his cattle in the field. Exod. ix. 21. And “he” ("Pharaoh") called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye, and the children of Israel, and go serve the Lord, as ye have said. Exod. xii. 31. So the posts (sent by Hezekiah to turn the people from idolatry) passed from city to city, through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, even unto Zebulun; but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them. 2 Ch. xxx. 10. But they (the people of Jerusalem), mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till

the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while he lingered, 16 the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful

there was no remedy. 2 Chron. xxxvi. 16. He that, being often reproved, hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. Prov. xxix. 1. Now, therefore, be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong, for I have heard from the Lord God of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth. Isa. xxviii. 22. "They" (“the Jews") have belied the Lord, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us, neither shall we see sword nor famine: wherefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them. Jer. v. 12. 14. Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived; thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh "me" ("Jeremiah"). Jer. xx. 7. Then said I (Ezekiel), Ah, Lord God, they say of me, doth he not speak parables? Ezek. xx. 49. "They" ("the soldiers") bowed the knee before "him" ("Jesus"), and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews. Matt. xxvii. 29. Likewise also, as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded: even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. Luke xvii. 28. 30. And their words (of the women who testified the resurrection of Christ) seemed to "them" ("the apostles") as idle tales, and they believed them not. Luke xxiv. 11. And when they (of Athens) heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, and others said, We will hear "thee" (“Paul") again of this matter. Acts xvii. 32. For when " they" (“sinners") shall say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them as travail upon a woman with child, and they shall not escape. 1 Thess. v. 3.

15 Hastened Lot.] See verse 17. and 22. Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. So they gat up from the tabernacle on every side. Numb. xvi. 24. 27. Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. Prov. vi. 4, 5. Strive to enter in at the strait gate; for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are. Luke xiii. 24, 25. For he

(the Lord) saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee; behold, now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Cor. vi. 2. Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost saith, To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness. Heb. iii. 7, 8. Come out of her, my people, for her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Rev. xviii. 4, 5.

16 He lingered, &c.] I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. Ps. cxix. 60. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him; and I will raise him up at the last day. John vi. 44.

Ps.

The Lord being merciful, &c.] And the Lord passed by before him (Moses), and proclaimed The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, &c. Exod. xxxiv. 6, 7. The Lord is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty. Numb. xiv. 18. For the Lord thy God is a merciful God; he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee. Deut. iv. 31. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. 1 Chron. xvi. 34. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Ps. xxxiv. 12. For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive, and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, long-suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. lxxxvi. 5. 15. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy: he hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. Ps. ciii. 8. 10. 13. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. He saved "them" ("his people") for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known. Ps. cvi. 1. 8. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. Ps. cvii. 1. He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the Lord is gracious and full of compassion. Ps. exi. 4. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good; because his mercy endureth for ever. Ps. cxviii. 1. and cxxxvi. 1. In all their affliction he was afflicted; and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them, and he bare them

unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the 17 city. And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain: escape to the mountain, lest 18 thou be consumed. And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:

and carried them all the days of old. Isa. lxiii. 9. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail. not. Lam. iii. 22. Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities, and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Micah vii. 18, 19. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest, for he is kind unto the unthankful, and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Luke vi. 35, 36. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. Luke xviii. 13. For he (God) saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. Rom. ix. 15. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Rom. ix. 16. 18. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort. 2 Cor. i. 3. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved). Eph. ii. 4, 5. Not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. Tit. iii. 5.

Brought him forth.] But Joshua had said to the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her (from Jericho). Josh. vi. 22. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment, to be punished. 2 Pet. ii. 9.

17 He said, &c.] See chap. xviii. 22. Escape for thy life.] See verse 14, 15. Haste thee, escape thither (to the city of refuge), for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither (said God to Lot). Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. Gen. xix. 22. And Michal, David's wife, told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to-night,

to-morrow thou shalt be slain. 1 Sam. xix. 11. And when he (Elijah) saw that (that Jezebel sent a messenger to him), he arose and went for his life, and came to Beersheba. 1 Kings xix. 3. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. Ps. cxxi. 1. O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come! Matt. iii. 7. Then (in the day of the Son of man) let them which be in Judea flee unto the mountains. Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. Matt. xxiv. 16. 18. How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation? Heb. ii. 3. Look not behind, &c.] But his (Lot's) wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. Gen. xix. 26. And Jesus said unto "him" (“ a certain man who followed him"), No man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. Luke ix. 62. In that day (when the Son of man is revealed), he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him not return back. Remember Lot's wife. Luke xvii. 31, 32 Brethren, I count not myself to have appre hended; but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God, in Christ Jesus. Phil. iii. 13, 14.

18 Oh, not so, my Lord.] And he (Jacob) said (to the angel with whom he wrestled), I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. Gen. xxxii. 26. But Naaman was wroth (when commanded by Elisha to wash in Jordan, to be cured of his leprosy), and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, he will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the Lord his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? May I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned, and went away in a rage. 2 Kings v 11, 12. Thus saith the Lord, the holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. Isa xlv. 11. Then cometh he (Jesus) to Simon Peter; and Peter said unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter.
