unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be 13 called. 12 Hearken unto her voice, &c.] And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit, yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. 1 Sa. viii. 7. 9. I am God, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. Is. xlvi. 10.

In Isaac shall thy seed, &c.] See chap. xvii. 19. 21. and com. Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children, but in Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of promise are counted for the seed. Ro. ix. 7, 8. Of whom it was said, that in Isaac shall thy seed be called. He. xi. 18.

13 Of the son of the bondwoman, &c.] Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. Ge. xxi. 18. See chap. xvi. 10. and com. and xvii. 20.

14 Rose up early, &c.] See chap. xix. 27. and com. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. Ge. xxii. 3. He (Abraham's servant) and the men that were with him tarried all night and they rose up in the morning; and he said (to Laban, &c.), Send me away unto my master. Ge. xxiv. 54. And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware (Isaac and Abimelech) one to another. Ge. xxvi. 31. I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. Ps. cxix. 60. He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him. Pr. xxvii. 14. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might. Ec. ix. 10.

Took bread.] But unto the sons of the concubines which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son (while he yet lived), eastward, unto the east country. Ge. xxv. 6. And Esau took

his wives, &c. &c. and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan, and went into the country, from the face of his brother Jacob; for their riches were more than that they might dwell together. Ge. xxxvi. 6, 7.

Sent her away.] The servant abideth not in the house for ever, but the son abideth ever. Jn. viii. 35.

Wandered in the wilderness, &c.] See chap. xvi. 7. And a certain man found "him" ("Joseph"), and behold he was wandering in the field. Ge. xxxvii. 15. They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way: they (the redeemed of the Lord) found no city to dwell in. Ps. cvii. 4. For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants thereof. They are come even unto Jazer, they wandered through the wil derness. Is. xvi. 8. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise: which things are an allegory, for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sina, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar; for this Agar is mount Sina in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. Ga. iv. 23, 24, 25.

Beer-sheba.] And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God. Ge. xxi. 33. And Abraham returned to his young men (who accompanied him with his son Isaac), and they rose up, and went together to Beersheba, and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba. Ge. xxii. 19. And he (Isaac) called "it" ("the water which his servants had found') Shebah; therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day. Ge. xxvi. 33. And Israel took his journey, with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. Ge. xlvi. 1. And when 66 "he" ("Elijak")

And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim; and there was no water for the people. And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this, that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us, and our children, and our cattle, with thirst? Ex. xvii. 1. 3. So the "king of Israel" ("Jehoram") went, and the king of Judah" (" Jehoshaphat"), and the king of Edom (against Mesha, king of Moab), and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey, and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them. 2 Ki. iii. 9. O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is. Ps. lxiii. 1. He (the idol maker) is hungry, and his strength faileth; he drinketh no water, and is faint. Is. xliv. 12. And their nobles (in the dearth) have sent their little ones to the waters; they came to the pits, and found no water: they (of Judah) returned with their vessels empty. Je. xiv. 3.

16 Let me not see the death, &c.] For how shall I (Judah) go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father. Ge. xliv. 34. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the "king" ("Solomon" when judging between the two harlots), for her bowels yearned upon her son; and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. 1 Ki. iii. 26. For how can I (Esther) endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people (the Jews)? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred? Es. viii. 6. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion of the son of her womb? Is. xlix. 15. And they (of Jerusalem) shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him as one mourneth for his only son; and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born. Zec. xii. 10. But when he (the prodigal) was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. Lu. xv. 20.

Lift up her voice and wept.] And Esau said unto his father (Isaac), Hast thou but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, my father! And Esau lifted up his voice and

wept. Ge. xxvii. 38. And Jacob kissed Rachel (having watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother), and lifted up his voice and wept. Ge. xxix. 11. And it came to pass when the angel of the Lord spake these words (of rebuke) unto all the children of Israel (at Bochim) that the people lifted up their voice and wept. Ju. ii. 4. The Lord grant you (said Naomi to her daughters-in-law) that ye may find rest each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed "them" (“ Orpah" and "Ruth"), and they lifted up their voice and wept. Ru. i. 9. Is this the voice of my son David? and Saul lifted up his voice and wept (David had spared his life, having cut off his skirt in the cave of En-gedi). 1 Sa. xxiv. 16. "Then" ("after the spoiling of Ziglag" by the Amalekites) David, and the people that were with him, lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep. 1 Sa. xxx. 4.

17 God heard the voice, &c.] See chap. xvi. 11. and com. If thou afflict them (the widow or fatherless child) in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; and it shall come to pass when he (the neighbour whose raiment you retain as a pledge) crieth unto me, I will hear, for I am gracious. Ex. xxii. 23. 27. And Jehoahaz besought the Lord, and the Lord hearkened unto him; and the Lord was gracious unto them (Israel), and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet. 2 Ki. xiii. 4. 23. And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. Ps. 1. 15. O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. Ps. lxv. 2. He (the godly man) shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him. Ps. xci. 15. Then Jesus called his disciples unto him and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. Mat. xv. 32.

Ps. cvii. 4. 6. For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not, I will help thee. Is. xli. 13. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee. When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burnt; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. Is. xliii. 2. He (Jesus) saith unto the ruler of the synagogue (whose daughter was dead), Be not afraid, only believe. Mar. v. 36. 18 I will make him a great nation.] See verse 13. chap. xvi. 10. and xvii. 20. and com. These are their generations: the first-born of Ishmael, Nebaioth; then Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, Mishma, and Dumah, Massa, Hadad (or Hadar), and Tema; Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael. 1 Chr. i. 29, 30, 31.

19 God opened her eyes.] Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face. Nu. xxii. 31. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes (of the young man, his servant) that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And it came to pass when they (whom Elisha smote with blindness) were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they may see: and the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw, &c. 2 Ki. vi. 17. 20. Then (in the day of Christ's kingdom) the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing; for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. Is. xxxv. 5, 6. But their eyes (of the two disciples going to Emmaus) were

holden, that they should not know him (Jesus). And their eyes were opened (as he sat at meat with them), and they knew him, and he vanished out of their sight. Lu. xxiv. 16. 31.

20 God was with the lad.] See chap. xvii. 20. and com. And behold, I am with thee (Jacob), and will keep thee in all placer whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. Ge. xxviii. 15. And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man, and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand. And the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. Ge. xxxix. 2, 3. 21. And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him (Gideon), and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. Ju. vi. 12. And the woman (Manoah's wife) bare a son, and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. And the Spirit of the Lord began to move him at times, in the camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol Ju. xiii. 24, 25. And the child (John) grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel. Lu. i. 80. And the child (Jesus) grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. Lu. ii. 40.

An archer.] He was a mighty hunter be fore the Lord; wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod, the mighty hunter before the Lord. Ge. x. 9. and com. See chap. xvi. 12. and com. Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out (said Isaac to Esau) to the field, and take me some venison. Ge. xxvii. 3. The archers have sorely grieved him (Joseph), and shot at him, and hated him (said Jacob, blessing his sons); but his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong, by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel. Ge. xlix. 23, 24.

21 In the wilderness of Paran.] And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai, and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran. Nu. x. 12. And afterward the people removed from Hazeroth, and pitched in the wilderness of Paran. Nu.

the land of Egypt. And it came to pass at that time, that Abime- 22 lech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest. Now therefore 23 swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me,

xii. 16. And Moses, by the commandment of the Lord, sent " them" (" the searchers of the land") from the wilderness of Paran. And they went, and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh. Nu. xiii. 3. 26. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran. 1 Sa. xxv. 1.

A wife out of the land of Egypt.] And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven (said Abraham to his servant), and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I dwell; but thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. Ge. xxiv. 3, 4. And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon, the Hittite, which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and Rebekah. Ge. xxvi. 34, 35. And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me? Ge. xxvii. 46. And Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan : arise, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, thy mother's father, and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban, thy mother's brother. Ge. xxviii. 1, 2. And “he” (“Samson") came up, and told his “father" ("Manoah") and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath, of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore get her for me to wife. Ju. xiv. 2. So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well, but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth bet1 Cor. vii. 38.

22 Abimelech.] See chap. xx. 2. and com. Then Abimelech went to him (Isaac) from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army (to make a covenant). Ge. xxvi. 26.

God is with thee.] So Abraham prayed unto God, and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants, and they bare children. Ge. xx. 17. And they (Abimelech and friends) said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with "thee" ("Isaac"), and we said, Let there now be an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee. Ge. xxvi. 28. And behold, I (the Lord) am with" thee" ("Jacob"), and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land.

Ge. xxviii. 15. I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me (said Laban to Jacob) for thy sake. Ge. xxx. 27. And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and his master saw that the Lord was with him. Ge. xxxix. 2. And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee. Jos. iii. 7. And the Lord his God was with "him" ("Solomon"), and magnified him exceedingly. 2 Chr. i. 1. Take counsel together (O ye people), and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand. For God is with us. Isa. viii. 10. They (of Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sabea) shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in "thee" (" Israel"), and there is none else, there is no God. Is. xlv. 14. In those days ten men shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you; for we (out of all languages of the nations) have heard that God is with you. Zec. viii. 23. They shall call his (the Messiah's) name " Emmanuel," which, being interpreted, is " God with us." Mat. i. 23. If God be for us, who can be against us? Ro. viii. 31. And thus are the secrets of "his" heart (" of one that believeth not") made manifest. And so falling down on his face, he will worship God, and report that God is in you, of a truth. 1 Co. xiv. 25. For he (God) hath said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. He. xiii. 3. Behold, I will make them (who say they are Jews) to come and worship before "thy" feet (" the church in Philadelphia"), and to know that I have loved thee. Re. iii. 9.

23 Swear unto me.] See chap. xiv. 22, 23. and com. And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou (my servant) shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites among whom "I" (“Abraham") dwell. Ge. xxiv. 3. Let there be now an oath betwixt us (said Abimelech to Isaac). Ge. xxvi. 28. Now therefore come thou (Jacob), let us make a covenant, I (Laban) and thou, and let it be for a witness between me and thee. The God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father, Isaac. Ge. xxxi. 44. 53. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. De. vi. 13. Now therefore I (Rahab) pray you swear unto me, by the Lord, since I have showed you kindness, that ye (Joshua and people of Israel) will also show kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token. Jos. ii. 12.

If

nor with my son, nor with my son's son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and 24 to the land wherein thou hast sojourned. And Abraham said, I 25 will swear. And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away. 26 And Abimelech said, I wot not who hath done this thing: neither 27 didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day. And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech;

there be good toward David, and I send not unto thee, and show it thee (said Jonathan), the Lord do so and much more to Jonathan ; but if it please my father (Saul) to do thee evil, then I will show it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace. And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved

him.

And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn, both of us, in the name of the Lord. 1 Sa. xx. 13. 17. 42. Swear now therefore to me, by the Lord, that "thou" (" David") wilt not cut off my (Saul's) seed after me; and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house. And David sware unto Saul. 1 Sa. xxiv. 21, 22.

And he (the Egyptian whom he, David, found in the field) said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company (the Amalekites). 1 Sa. xxx. 15. And thou shalt swear (said the Lord to Israel), The Lord liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness, and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory. Je. iv. 2. Moreover, I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you, I came not as yet unto Corinth. 2 Co. i. 23. For men verily swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. He. vi. 16.

I have done unto thee.] And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and men-servants, and women-servants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. Ge. xx. 14. 24 I will swear.] And there came one that had escaped (when Lot was taken in battle), and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre, the Amorite, brother of Eschol, and brother of Aner; and these were confederate with Abram. Ge. xiv. 13. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Ro. xii. 18. See Heb. vi. 16. preced. com.

25 Reproved Abimelech.] For all the wells, which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth. And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours; and he called the name of the well Esek, because they strove with him. Ge. xxvi. 15. 20. And "they" ("the people of Laban") said, We cannot (water the flocks) until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone

from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep. Ge. xxix. 8. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well. Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. And the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. Ex. ii. 15-17. And it came to pass when "she" ("Achsah") came to him (Othniel), that she moved him to ask of her "father" ("Caleb') a field; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou? And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs. Ju. i. 15. A reproof entereth more into a wise man, than an hundred stripes into a fool. Pr. xvii. 10. Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself. Pr. xxv. 9. Open rebuke is better than secret love. Pr. xxvii. 5. If thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between him and thee, alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. Mat. xviii. 15.

Servants had violently taken away.] And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle. Ge. xiii. 7. and com. See preced. com. 26 I wot not, &c.] See chap. xiii. 7. But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman, this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought; but as the Lord liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him. And when he came to the tower, he took "them" ("the two talents of silver and two changes of raiment"), and bestowed them in the house; and he let the men go, and they departed. 2 Ki. v. 20. 24.

27 Took sheep, &c.] And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the pos sessor of heaven and earth, that I will not take from a thread even to a shoe-latchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say I have made Abram rich. Ge. xiv. 22, 23. A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth. Pr. xvii. 8. A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men : a man that hath friends
