it maketh rich. Pr. x. 22. By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life. Pr. xxii. 4. Godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 1 Ti. iv. 8.

Flocks, &c.] See chap. xii. 16. and com. and xiii. 1, with com. And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends; also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. Job xlii. 10. He (the Lord) blesseth them (the hungry) also, so that they are multiplied greatly, and suffereth not their cattle to decrease. Ps. cvii. 38.

36 Sarah, my master's wife.] Chap. xi. 29. 30. and com. and xvii. 15. 19; xxi. 1. 7. and And being not weak in faith, he (Abraham) considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb. Ro. iv. 19.

Unto him hath he given, &c.] See chap. xxi. 10. and com. And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac. Ge. xxv. 5.

37 My master made me swear, &c.] See verse 2. 9. and com.; vi. 2. and com. "They" ("the Israelites") have taken of their daughters (of the people of the land) for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands; yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass: and when I (Ezra) heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head, and of my beard, and sat down astonied. Ez. ix. 2, 3.

Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. Ge. xvii. 1. and com. Keep (said David to Solomon), the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself. 1 Ki. ii. 3. Will send his angel.] See verse 7. And he (that walketh in the law of the Lord) shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water: his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Ps. i. 3. He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Ps. xci. 11. Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, that delivered his servants that trusted in him. Da. iii. 28 And when I (John) had heard and seen (these (things), I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then shalt thou be clear, &c.] Ye stand this day (said Moses) all of you before the Lord; that thou shouldest enter into covenant with the Lord thy God, and into his oath, which the Lord thy God maketh with thee this day. De. xxix. 12.

42 O Lord God, &c.] See chap. xii. 14. and com. And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of

Lord God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go: Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall 43 come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink; And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also 44 draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the Lord hath appointed out for my master's son. And before I had done 45 speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee. And 46 she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank,

them that waited on him continually; and when he had declared all these things, he sent them to Joppa. And they said (to Peter), Cornelius, the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God, by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee. Ac. x. 7. 8. 22.

Prosper my way, &c.] See verse 12. 31. and com. And his "master" ("Potiphar") saw that the Lord was with "him" ("Joseph"), and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper. Ge. xxxix. 3. Then I (Ezra) proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. Ez. viii. 21. O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of "thy servant” (“ Nehemiah”), and to the prayer of thy servants who desire to fear thy name; and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man (Artaxerxes). Ne. i. 11. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass. Ps. xxxvii. 5. And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it. Ps. xc. 17. I make mention of you always in my prayers (said Paul), making request (if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God) to come unto you. Ro. i. 10.

44 Both drink thou, &c.] The liberal deviseth liberal things. Is. xxxii. 8. (I will therefore) that women adorn themselves, not with embroidered hair, but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. 1 Tim. ii. 9. 10. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers. He. xiii. 2. Love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous. 1 Pe. iii. 8.

The woman whom the Lord, &c.] See verse xiv. and com. And the rib which the Lord God had taken from man made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. Ge. ii. 22. The

lot is cast into the lap, but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord. Pr. xvi. 33. Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord. Pr. xviii. 22. A prudent wife is from the Lord. Pr. xix. 14.

45 Before I had done speaking.] See verse 15. 20. and com. O Lord, hear (said Daniel); O Lord, forgive: O Lord, hearken, and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God, &c. Da. ix. 19. And when "they" ("the company of the apostles") heard "that" ("that Peter and John, who healed the lame man, were let go"), they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. Ac. iv. 24. 33. And Cornelius (a centurion of the Italian band) said, Four days ago I was fasting, until this hour, and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing. Ac. x. 30. And when "he" ("Peter" delivered by an angel out the hand of Herod) had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John, whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying. But he (as they were astonished at his appearance), beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. Ac. xii. 12. 17. Ask, and it shall be given you, &c. Mat. vii. 7.

Speaking in mine heart.] Now "Hannah" ("the mother of Samuel"), she spake in her heart, only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli (the priest) thought she had been drunken. And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. 1 Sa. i. 13. 15. And Joab said (to Abner, who had slain his brother Asahel), As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people (under Joab) had gone up 2 Sa. every one from following his brother.

47 and she made the camels drink also.

And I asked her, and said,

Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the 48 ear-ring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the Lord, and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right 49 way, to take my master's brother's daughter unto his son. And now, if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth 51 from the Lord: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. Behold,

ii. 27. Then the king (Artaxerxes) said unto me (Nehemiah), For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. Ne. ii. 4. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities; for we know not what we should pray for as we ought. But the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us, with groanings which cannot be uttered. Ro. viii. 26.

47 And I put the ear-ring, &c.] See verse 22. and com. And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah. Ge. xxiv. 53. Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. Ps. xlv. 9. The king's "daughter” (“the church" of Christ) is all glorious within her clothing is of wrought gold she shall be brought to the king in raiment of needlework, &c. Ps. xlv. 13, 14. Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God; for as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry "thee" ("the church of Christ"). Is. lxii. 3. 5. I clothed "thee" (" Jerusalem") also with broidered work. Ez. xvi. 10. Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver. Ez. xvi. 13. Christ also gave himself for "it" ("his church"), that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water, by the word; that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy, and without blemish. Ep. v. 26, 27.

Which had led me in the right way.] See verse 27. chap. xxii. 23. and com. And thou (Moses) shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do (said Jethro the priest of Midian, Moses' father-inlaw). Ex. xviii. 20. Then I proclaimed a fast there, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us. Ezr. viii. 21. I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go; I will guide thee with mine eye: for this God is our God for ever; he will be our guide even unto death. Ps. xlviii. 14. And he (the Lord) led them forth by the right way, that they might go

to a city of habitation. Ps. cvii. 7. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Pr. iii. 5, 6. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. Pr. iv. 11. Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God, which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. Is. xlviii. 17.

49 Deal kindly and truly with my master, &c.] Deal kindly and truly with me (said Jacob to Joseph); bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt. Ge. xlvii. 29. When the Lord has given us the land (said the spies to Rahab), we will deal kindly and truly with thee. Jos. ii. 14.

Deal kindly.] I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth which thou hast shewed unto thy servant. Ge. xxxii. 10. Let not mercy and truth for sake thee: bind them about thy neck, write them upon the table of thine heart. Pr. iii. 3. Mercy and truth have met together. P. lxxxv. 10.

That I may turn to the right hand, &c.] Let us pass, “I” (“ Moses") pray thee, through thy "country" (" Edom"): we will not pass through the fields or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the waters of the wells: we will go by the king's highway, we will not turn to the right hand or to the left, until we have passed thy borders. Nu. xx. 17. Let me pass through thy land (the land of Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon): I will go along by the highway, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left. De. ii. 27. 50 Laban and Bethuel.] See verses 15. 28. 55. 60.

The thing proceedeth, &c.] This is the Lord's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. Ps. cxviii. 23. Jesus saith unto them" ("the priests and elders"), Did ye never read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes. Mat. xxi. 42.

We cannot speak unto thee, &c.] And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night. and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak

Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the Lord hath spoken. And it came to pass, 52 that, when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth. And the servant brought forth 53 jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were 54 with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. And her brother 55

not to Jacob either good or bad. It is in the power of my hand (said Laban) to do you hurt, but the God of your fathers spake to me yesternight, saying, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. Ge. xxxi. 24. 29. And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar. 2 Sa. xiii. 22. Forasmuch then as God gave them (the Gentiles) the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, what was I, that I could withstand God? Ac. xi. 17.

51 Is before thee.] And Abimelech said (to Abraham), My land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee. Ge. xx. 15.

Hath spoken.] See verse 15. And the king (David) said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah (Abishai, &c.)? So let him (Shimei) curse, because the Lord hath said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so ? 2 Sa. xvi. 10. 52 Worshipped the Lord.] See verse 26. and com. I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall be continually in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. Ps. xxxiv. 1, 2. O that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men. And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing. Ps. cvii. 21, 22. I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications: because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. Ps. exvi. 1, 2. And when "they" ("the wise men") were come into the house, they saw the young child (Jesus) with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshipped him. Mat. ii. 11. As Peter was coming, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him but Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. Ac. x. 25, 26.

53 Jewels.] But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, &c. Er. iii. 32. Speak now (said the Lord to Moses) in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold. Ex. xi. 2. And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses, and they

borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment. Ex. xii.

35.

Precious things.] And of Joseph he (Moses) said, Blessed of the Lord be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep which coucheth beneath, and for the precious things of the earth, and the fulness thereof. De. xxxiii. 13. 16. And their father (Jehoshaphat) gave them (his sons, Azariah, and Michael, and Shephatiah) great gifts of silver and of gold, and of precious things, &c. 2 Ch. xxi. 3. And all they that were about " them" (" the priests and the Levites") strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, with beasts, and with precious things. Ezr. i. 6. Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits. Can. iv. 13. And Hezekiah was glad of them (the ambassadors of Merodach-baladan, king of Babylon), and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointments, and all the house of his armoury, and all that was found in his treasures. Is. xxxix. 2.

54 Send me away, &c.] Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my way: send me away, that I may go to my master. And they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men. Ge. xxiv. 56. 59. And I will fetch a morsel of bread (said Abraham), and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on. And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, and make cakes upon the hearth. Ge. xviii. 5, 6. And Isaac sent away Jacob, and he went to Padan-aram unto Laban, &c. When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-aram, &c. &c. Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael. Ge. xxviii. 5, 6. 9. So he (Joseph) sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said unto them, See that fall not out by the way. Ge. xlv. 24. Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run and bear the king (David) tidings, how that the Lord hath avenged him of his enemies (in the death of Absolom). And the watchman (of David) said, Methinketh the running of the foremost (of two men who were seen approaching) is like the running of

and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at 56 the least ten; after that she shall go. And he said unto them,

Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my way; send me 57 away, that I may go to my master. And they said, We will call 58 the damsel, and enquire at her mouth. And they called Rebekah,

and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? and she said, I 59 will go. And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, 60 and Abraham's servant, and his men. And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister; be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those 61 which hate them. And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant

Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings. And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well: and he fell down on his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the Lord thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king. 2 Sa. xviii. 19. 27, 28. Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings. Pr. xxii. 29. Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him. Lu. viii. 38, 39.

55 A few days.] And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. Ge. iv. 3. And if a man sell a dwelling-house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; within a full year may he redeem it. Le. xxv. 29. And after a time "he" (" Samson") returned to take her (his wife), and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion; and behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion. Ju. xiv. 8.

56 Prospered my way.] This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Jos. i. 8. I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him (Israel): I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous. Is. xlviii. 15.

58 Wilt thou go with this man?] Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house; so shall the king greatly desire thy beauty, for he is thy lord, and worship thou him. Ps. xlv. 10, 11. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it unto me according to thy word. Lu. i. 38.

59 Their sister.] See verses 50. 53. 60.

Her nurse.] But Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried beneath Bethel, under an oak. Ge. xxxv. 8. Have "I" ("Moses") conceived all this "people" ("Israel")? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers? Nu. xi. 12. But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children. 1 Th. ii. 7.

60 They blessed Rebekah, &c.] See chap. i. 28; ix. 1; xiv. 19; and xvii. 16. with com. And God Almighty bless thee (said Isaac to Jacob), and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people. Ge. xxviii. 3. And he (Jacob) blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, the angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless "the lads" (“Ephraim and Manasseh”). And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim, and as Manasseh. Ge. xlviii. 15, 16. 20. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel, and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel. And let thy house (Boaz's) be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman. Ru. iv. 11, 12.

Thousands, &c.] A fiery stream issued and came forth from before "him" ("the Ancient of days," in Daniel's vision of God's kingdom): thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. Da. vii. 10.

Thy seed possess the gate, &c.] See chap. xxii. 17. and com. And ye shall take "them" ("the children of the strangers") as an inheritance for your children after you, inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren, the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour. Le. xxv. 46.
