26 Acknowledged them.] And he (Jacob) knew it (Joseph's coat), and said, It is my son's coat, an evil beast hath devoured him. Ge. xxxvii. 33.

She hath been more righteous, &c.] And he (Saul) said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil. I Sa. xxiv. 17. And David spake unto the Lord, when he saw the angel that smote the people (with pestilence, for his numbering the people), and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house. 2 Sa. xxiv. 17. Thou also (Jerusalem), which hast judged thy "sisters" ("Sodom and Samaria"), bear thine own shame for thy sins, that thou hast committed more abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou; yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters. Ez. xvi. 52. Thou (O God) art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity; wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he. Hab. i. 13. And they which heard "it" (“that he that was without sin, should first cast a stone at the woman taken in adultery"), being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest even unto the last. John viii. 9. Now we know, that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and

all the world may become guilty before God. Ro. iii. 19.

Because that I gave, &c.] See verse 14. And he knew her again no more.] Now it is come upon thee (who hast instructed many) and thou faintest; it toucheth thee and thou art troubled, Job iv. 5. Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more. That which I see not, teach thou me; if I have done iniquity I will do no more. Job xxxiv. 31, 32 Once have I spoken, but I will not answer (said Job, humbling himself before God), yea, twice, but I will proceed no further. Job xl. 5. Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance. Mat. iii. 8. The night is far spent, the day is at hand; let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Ro. xiii. 12. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us, that denying ungodliness, and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world. Tit. ii. 11, 12. That he (that hath suffered in the flesh), no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh, to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles; when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries. 1 Pe. iv. 2, 3.

And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous 2 man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And 3

30 Zarah.] Of the sons of Zerah; Jeuel and their brethren, six hundred and ninety. 1 Ch. ix. 6. Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram. Mat. i. 3.

CHAP. XXXIX.-1 Was brought down, &c.] And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard. Ge. xxxvii. 36. And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you; and they came near. And he said, am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. Ge. xlv. 4. He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant. Ps. cv. 17.

The Ishmeelites.] See chap. xxxvii. 25. 28. 2 The Lord was with Joseph.] The Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison; the keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand, because the Lord was with him; and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper. Ge. xxxix.

21. 23. God is with thee in all that thou doest (said Abimelech and Phichol to Abraham). Ge. xxi. 22. And the Lord appeared unto him (Isaac) the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake. And "he" (" who delights in the law of the Lord") shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season: his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Ps. i. 3. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Ps. xlvi. 7. 11. I will be with him (that loveth the Lord) in trouble. I will deliver him, and honour him. Ps. xci. 15. Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us. Is. viii. 9, 10. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Is. xli. 10. When thou passest through the waters I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. Is. xliii. 2. I will make thee unto this people a fenced brazen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Je. xv. 20. A virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Mat. i. 23. And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him, and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. Ac. vii. 9, 10. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us who can be against us? Ro. viii. 31.

In the house of his master the Egyptian.] Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called. Art thou called, being a servant? Care not for it: but if thou mayest

be made free, use it rather. For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's free man: likewise also, he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant. Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God. 1 Co. vii. 20-24. Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. 1 Ti. vi. 1. Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. Tit. ii. 9, 10.

3 Saw that the Lord was with him.] See verse 23. 2. and com. I have learned by experience (said Laban to Jacob) that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake. It was little (said Jacob) which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the Lord hath blessed thee since my coming. Ge. xxx. 27. 30. And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him. And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him. 1 Sa. xviii. 14. 28. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, In "those days" ("of the restoration of Jerusalem") it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you. Zec. viii. 23. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Mat. v. 16. Do all things that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; holding forth the word of life. Phi. ii. 15, 16. Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. Re. iii. 9.

Prosper in his hand.] See verse 23; and chap. xxx. 27. preced. com. Be strong and of good courage (said God to Joshua), only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it, to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written 7

therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Jos. i. 7, 8. Then shalt thou prosper if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the Lord charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed. 1 Ch. xxii. 13. And "he" (" Uzziah") sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God; and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper. 2 Ch. xxvi. 5. Then answered I "them" ("Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem, the enemies of the Jews"), and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us (in building the wall of Jerusalem). Ne. ii. 20. Whatsoever he doeth (who delights in the law of the Lord) shall prosper. Ps. i. 3. Upon the first day of the week, let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. 1 Co. xvi. 2.

Found grace, &c.] See verse 21. And (Abraham) said, My Lord" (to the "three men," angels whom he ran to meet from the tent door), if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant. Ge. xviii. 3. Behold now, thy servant (said Lot to the angels who came to destroy Sodom) hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die. Ge. xix. 19. Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau (said Jacob to his messengers), I have oxen, and asses, and flocks, and menservants, and maidservants; and I have sent to tell my lord that I may find grace in thy sight. Ge. xxxii. 5. And be (Esau) said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord. And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grece in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand. Ge. xxxiii. 8. 10. And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me, for he hath found favour in my sight. 1 Sa. xvi. 22. Then "the king" ("Artaxerxes”) said unto "me" (“Nehemiah"), For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said unto the king, If it please the king. and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight (I ask), that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers" sepulchres, that I may build it. Ne. ii. 4, 5 When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with han Pr. xvi. 7.

over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field. And he left 6 all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly

prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. Ge. xxxix. 22. The steward of my house (said Abraham) is this Eleazar of Damascus. Ge. xv. 2. And Abraham said to his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, &c. (sending him to seek a wife for Isaac). Ge. xxiv. 2. Thou shalt be over my house, and according to thy word shall all my people be ruled, only in the throne will I be greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. Ge. xli. 40, 41. The king's favour is toward a wise servant. Pr. xiv. 35. A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren. Pr. xvii. 2. Seest thou a man diligent in his business; he shall stand before kings. Pr. xxii. 29. Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured. Pr. xxvii. 18. Take heed therefore (said Paul) unto "yourselves" ("elders of the Church of Ephesus"), and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the Church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Ac. xx. 28.

Obed-edom, and all his houshold. And it was told king David, saying, The Lord hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. 2 Sa. vi. 11, 12. For thou hast made "him" ("the king," as a type of Christ) most blessed for ever; thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance. Ps. xxi. 6. His (Christ's) name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun, and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed. Ps. lxxii. 17. Fear not, Paul (said God); God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Ac. xxvii. 24. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. Ep. i. 3.

6 Left all that he had.] See verse 4. Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house; and he hath committed all that he hath into my hand. The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under "his" ("Joseph's") hand. Ge. xxxix. 8. 23. He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least, is unjust also in much. Lu. xvi. 10. And he (the nobleman in the parable) said unto "him" ("his servant"), Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. Lu. xix. 17.

Save the bread which he did eat.] And they set on for him by himself, and for them (Joseph's brethren) by themselves; and for the Egyptians which did eat with him, by And themselves; because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. Ge. xliii. 32. Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth. Pr. xi. 31. The heart of her (the virtuous woman's) husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. Pr. xxxi. 11.

5 For Joseph's sake.] And I will make of thee (Abram) a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing. Ge. xii. 2. When God destroyed the cities of the plain, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt. Ge. xix. 29. Laban said unto "him" ("Jacob"), I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake. Ge. xxx. 27. And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out. De. xxviii. 2-6. And the ark of the Lord continued in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months: and the Lord blessed

A goodly person, &c.] When Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman (Sarai) that she was fair; the princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh. Ge. xii. 14, 15. Leah was tender-eyed, but Rachel was beautiful and well-favoured. Ge. xxix. 17. Now "he" ("David") was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look at. 1 Sa. xvi. 12. And when the Philistine (Goliath) looked about, and saw David, he dis

But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, 9 and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any

dained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. 1 Sa. xvii. 42.

In which time (when another king arose in Egypt) Moses was born, and was exceeding fair. Ac. vii. 20.

7 Cast her eyes upon Joseph.] The sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were fair, and they took them wives of all which they chose. Ge. vi. 2. I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? Job xxxi. 1. Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity. Ps. cxix. 37. Aholah (or Samaria) played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours, which were clothed with blue, captains and rulers, all of them desirable young men. Ez. xxiii. 5, 6. She (Aholibah, or Jerusalem) doted on the Assyrians her neighbours, all of them desirable young men; and as soon as she saw them with her eyes she doted upon them. Ez. xxiii. 12. 16. Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Mat. v. 28. These (the false teachers) are natural brute beasts, having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin. 2 Pe. ii. 14. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1 John ii. 16.

Lie with me.] (Understanding shall keep thee) to deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words. Pr. ii. 16. Remove thy way from her, lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel. Pr. v. 9. So she (the harlot) caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry come, let us take our fill of love. Pr. vii. 13. 18. Therefore (for Judah's wickedness) the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed. Je. iii. 3. Thou (Jerusalem) hast built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband. And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms: whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms, and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee; therefore thou art contrary. Ez. xvi. 25.

8 He refused.] My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. Pr. i. 10. When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; discretion shall preserve thee, to keep thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger that flattereth with her words. Pr. ii. 10. 16. None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life. Pr. ii. 19. The lips of a strange woman drop as an honey-comb, and her mouth is smoother than oil. Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house. Pr. v. 3. 8. Lust not after "her" (“ the harlot's") beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. He that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent. But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. Pr. vi. 25. 29. 32, 33. Keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words. Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death. Pr. vii. 5. 25. 27. A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing. For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city, to call passengers who go right on their ways. Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant: but he knoweth not that the dead are there, and that her guests are in the depths of hell Pr. ix. 13-18. The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the Lord shall fall therein. Pr. xxii. 14. My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways; for a whore is a deep ditch, and a strange woman is a narrow pit. She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men. Pr. xxiii. 26-28

My master wotteth, &c.] A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. Pr. xviii. 24.

9 None greater in this house.] Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh. Ge. xxiv, 2. And I (Nehemiah) said, Should such a man as I flee? And who is there that, being as I am,
