Carry corn for the famine, &c.] See verses 1, 2. And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence. Ge. xlii. 26. And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians. Ge. xli. 56. And the famine was sore in the land. And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food. Ge. xliii. 1, 2. And to his father "he" ("Joseph") sent after this manner; ten asses laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten she-asses laden with corn, and bread, and meat, for his father by the way. Ge. xlv. 23.

20 Bring your youngest brother.] See verses 15. 34. If thou wilt not send him (Benjamin), we will not go down, for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face except your brother be with you. And they (Joseph's brethren) came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house. Ge. xliii. 5. 19. And thou saidst unto thy servants (said his brethren to Joseph), Except your youngest brother come down with you ye shall see my face no more. Ge. xliv. 22.

And they did so.] See verse 26. Thus did Noah (in providing the ark, &c.); according to all that God commanded him, so did he. Ge. vi. 22. His mother saith unto the servants (at the marriage of Cana in Galilee), Whatsoever "he" ("Jesus") saith unto you, do it. John ii. 5.

21 They said one to another.] Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day. Ge. xli. 9. But if ye (the Reubenites, and Gadites, &c.) will not do so (go armed over Jordan until their enemios be driven out, &c.), behold, ye have sinned against the Lord; and be sure your sin will find you out. Nu. xxxii. 23. And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord (in taking Uriah's wife, &c.). 2 Sa. xii. 13. And she (the widow of Zarephath) said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? 1 Ki. xvii. 18. He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; he (the Lord) will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. I see not, teach thou me; if I have done iniquity I will do no more. Job xxxiv. 31, 32. If they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction; then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded. Job xxxvi. 8, 9. I (the Lord) will go, and return to my place till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face. In their affliction they (Israel) will seek me early. Ho. v. 15. Then Judas, which had betrayed him (Jesus), when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned, in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. I pray thee, father, that thou wouldest send him (Lazarus) to my father's house: for I have five brethren (said the rich man to Abraham, being in torments); that he may testify unto them, lest they also come unto this place of torment. Lu. xvi. 28. And many that believed came and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Ac. xix. 18. We saw the anguish of his soul.] It came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren (sent by Jacob to see whether it was well with his brethren, and well with the flock), that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him, and they took him and cast him into a pit, and the pit was empty, and there was no water in it. And they sat down to eat bread: and Judah sald unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites (whom they saw passing with spicery, &c. going down into Egypt). And his brethren were content. Then there passed by Midianites, merchantmen, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver, and they brought Joseph into Egypt. Ge. xxxvii. 23-28. And Adoni-bezek (king of the Canaanites and Perizzites, whom the Israelites caught as he fled) said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. Ju. i. 7. Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard. Pr. xxi. 13. If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain: if thou

sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works? Pr. xxiv. 11, 12. A man that doeth violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit; let no man stay him. Pr. xxviii. 17. Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when he led thee by the way? Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore, and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord God of hosts. Je. ii. 17, 19. Thy way, and thy doings, have procured these things unto thee: this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart. Je. iv. 18. Thus saith the Lord, Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. Je. xxxiv. 17. With what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Mat. vii. 2. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John i. 9. He shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. Ja. ii. 13.

This distress come upon us.] I will mock when your fear cometh, when your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer. They shall seek me early, but they shall not find me. Pr. i. 27, 28.

22 Spake I not unto you.] And Reuben heard it (his brethren intending to slay Joseph), and delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him. And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again. And Reuben returned unto the pit (into which his brethren were content to cast him), and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit (for the Midianites had lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmeelites) and he rent his clothes. And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and

I, whither shall I go? Ge. xxxvii. 21, 22. 29, 30. We indeed (suffer) justly (said the thief on the cross to his fellow), for we receive the due reward of our deeds, but this man (Christ) hath done nothing amiss. Lu. xxiii. 41. The Gentiles having not the law are a law unto themselves, which shew the work of the law written in their hearts: their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the meanwhile accusing or else excusing one another. Ro. ii. 14, 15.

And

His blood is required.] Thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground (said God to Cain). Ge. iv. 10. Surely your blood of your lives will I require. At the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed. Ge. ix. 5, 6. the Lord shall return his (Abner's) blood upon his own (Joab's) head, who fell upon two men (Abner and Amasa) more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof (said Solomon). 1 Ki. ii. 32. Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada (the priest) his (Zechariah's) father had done to him, but slew his "son" (“Zechariak”). And when he died, he said, The Lord look upon it, and require it. 2 Ch. xxiv. 2. When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them, he forgetteth not the cry of the humble. Ps. ix. 12. When I say unto the wicked, thou shalt surely die, and thou (the watchman of the Lord) givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Ez. iii. 18. That the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple. Verily, I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. xi. 50, 51. And when the barbarians (of the island of Melita) saw the venomous “beast" ("the viper”) hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man (Paul) is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live. Ac. xxviii. 4. He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and faith of the saints. Re. xiii. 10. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and

from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes. Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, 25 and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way and thus did he unto them. And they 26 laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence. And as one 27 of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth. And 28 he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is

they repented not to give him glory. Re. xvi. 9.

24 Wept, &c.] And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother (Benjamin): and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. Ge. xliii. 30. In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved "them" ("Israel"): in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old. Js. Ixiii. 9. And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it. Lu. xix. 41. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Ro. xii. 15. God hath tempered the body together, that the members should have the same care one for another and whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. J Co. xii. 24. 26. For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with a feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. He. iv. 15. Jesus wept (coming to the tomb of Lazarus). John xi. 35. See Ge. xliii. 30.

Simeon.] And it came to pass on the third day, when they (the Shechemites) were sore, that the two sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city (of Shechem) boldly, and slew all the males. Ge. xxxiv. 25. Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. Cursed be their anger (against the Shechemites, said Jacob) for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. Ge. xlix. 5. 7. Of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Jude 22, 23.

25 Commanded to fill their sacks.] And he (Joseph) commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's. money in his sack's mouth: and put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn-money: and he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. Ge. xliv. 1, 2. Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no

money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk, without money, and without price. Is. lv. 1.

To give them provision, &c.] And Joseph gave them (his brethren) waggons according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way (sending them to bring thnir father, &c.) Ge. xlv. 21. Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Mat. vi. 33.

And thus did he unto them.] I say unto you, Love your enemies (said Jesus), bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you. Mat. v. 44. Recompense no man evil for evil, provide things honest in the sight of all men. be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. If thine enemy hunger, feed him: if he thirst, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Ro. xii. 17-21. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, but contrariwise blessing. 1 Pe. iii. 9.

27 The inn.] And it came to pass (said Joseph's brethren to his steward), when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks; and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight, and we have brought it again in our hand. Ge. xliii. 21. Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack. Ge. xliv. 11. And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him (Moses), and sought to kill him (as a rebuke for not having circumcised his son). Ex. iv. 24. And she (Mary) brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Lu. ii. 7. And (a certain Samaritan, said Jesus in a parable) went to him, and bound up his (the traveller's) wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. Lu. x. 34.

even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done 29 unto us? And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of 30 Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying, The man,

who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for 31 spies of the country. And we said unto him, We are true men ; 32 we are no spies: We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of 33 Canaan. And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your 34 housholds, and be gone: And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in 35 the land. And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were

I opened to my "beloved" (said the "Church of Christ"); but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer. Can. v. 6. And there shall be (in the great day of the Lord) signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity: the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Lu. xxi. 25, 26.

What is this that God hath done, &c.] I form the light, and create darkness; I make

peace, and create evil; I, the Lord, do all these things. Is. lv. 7. The Lord hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries. La. ii. 17. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. La. iii. 27. Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? Shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it? Am. iii. 6.

34 Traffick, &c.] And ye shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you (said Hamor the Shechemite to Jacob and his sons): dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein. These men are peaceable with us (said Hamor and Shechem to the Shechemites, respecting Jacob and his sons). Therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them. Ge. xxxiv. 10. 21. The weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold, beside that he (Solomon) had of the merchantmen, and of the traffick of the spice merchants, and of all the kings of Arabia, and of the governors of the country. Ki. x. 15. "He" (the "eagle" in the parable) cropped of the top of his (the cedar of Lebanon's) young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants. Ez xvii. 4.

35 Every man's bundle, &c.] See verse 27, 28. And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack. Ge. xliii. 21.

36 Me have ye bereaved.] See Ge. xxxvii. 20-35. and com. And God Almighty give you mercy before the man (said Jacob), that he may send away your brother (Simeon), and Benjamin; if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved. Ge. xliii. 14.

the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Co. x. 13. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. 2 Co. iv. 17. Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure; ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. Ja. v. 7—11.

All these things are against me.] And Israel said, It is enough: Joseph my son is yet alive; I will go and see him before I die. Ge. xlv. 28. And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's houshold, with bread, according to their families. Ge. xlvii. 12. And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul; there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more, in any coast of Israel: 80 shall I escape out of his hand. 1 Sa. xxvii. 1. O remember that my life is wind; mine eye 37 Slay my two sons, &c.] I will be surety shall no more see good. Job vii. 7. Fear thou not, for I am with lest peradventure I see the evil that shall thee: be not dismayed, for I am thy God; come on my father. Ge. xliv. 32-34. And I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee; the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of Hezron, and Carmi. Ge. xlvi. 9. Will the my righteousness: for I the Lord thy God Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I Fear not; I will help thee: fear not, thou give my firstborn for my transgression, the worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel.
