house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses. There were they in great fear, where no fear Ps. liii. 5. When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me. Ps. lxxiii. 16. And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim: and his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind. Is. vii. 2. Seek occasion.] But his (Samson's) father and mother knew not that it was of the Lord that he sought an occasion against the Philistines (in desiring a wife of them). Ju. xiv. 4. They (the youth, in contempt,) came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me. Job xxx. 14. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. Ro. vii. 8.

We came indeed down.] See verse 3. 7. Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt; and they said unto him (Joseph), To buy food are thy servants come. And as one of them (on his return homeward) opened his sack to give his ass provender, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth. And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks (in the land of Canaan), behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack. Ge. xlii. 3. 10. 27. 35.

21 We have brought it again.] See verse 12. and com. Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as ye have. He. xiii. 5.

23 Peace be to you.] And the Lord said unto him (Gideon), Peace be unto thee: fear not (for he feared, having seen the angel of the Lord); thou shalt not die. Ju. vi. 23. And

the old man said (to the Levite seeking his concubine), Peace be with thee; however, let all thy wants lie upon me, only lodge not in the street. Ju. xix. 20. And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity; Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast (was the message of David to Nabal). 1 Sa. xxv. 6. Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. 1 Ch. xii. 18. 26 Bowed themselves, &c.] See verse 28. Let people serve thee (said Isaac to Jacob), and nations bow down to thee; be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee. Ge. xxvii. 29. And his (Joseph's) brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? And his father rebuked him (having told his dreams), and said unto him, Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? And (when Joseph was sent by his father to visit his brethren) they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams. Ge. xxxvii. 8. 10. 19, 20. And Joseph was the governor over the land; and he it was that sold to all the people of the land; and Joseph's brethren came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the earth. Ge. xlii. 6. They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow themselves before him. The kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts. Ps. lxxii. 9, 10. It is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. Ro. xiv. 11. At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phi. ii. 10, 11.

27 Welfare.] And he (Jacob) said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks, and bring me word again. Ge. xxxvii. 14. Joseph answered Pharaoh (having heard his dream), saying, It is not in me; God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. Ge. xli. 16. Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked

each other of their welfare. Ex. xviii. 7. And "they" (the "five men" who went to spy out the country of Laish) turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man, the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him. Ju. xviii. 15. David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren. 1 Sa. xvii. 22. And David sent out ten young men. The old man of whom ye spake.] We are all one man's sons. Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. Ge. xlii. 11. 13.

28 And they bowed down their heads, &c.] See verse 26. and com.

Obeisance.] See Ex. xviii. 7. in com, on verse 27. It came to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man (the Amalekite who killed Saul) came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes rent and earth upon his head : and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance. 2 Sa. i. 2. And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king (David, interceding for Absalom's return), she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance. 2 Sa. xiv. 4. And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king (interceding that Solomon should reign after David). 1 Ki. i. 16. Now after the death of Jehoiada (the priest) came the princes of Judah, sud made obeisance to the "king” (“Joash"). 2 Ch. xxiv. 17.

29 His mother's son.] God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened unto her, and opened her womb; and she conceived and bare a son, and said, God hath taken away my reproach: and she called his name Joseph, and said, The Lord shall add to me another son. Ge. xxx. 22-24. And it came to pass, when

Of whom ye spake unto me.] See verse 27. and com.

God be gracious unto thee.] It was not you (said Joseph to his brethren) that sent me hither, but God. Ge. xlv. 8. And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him, and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

vii. 19. My sons (said Hezekiah to the Levites), be not now negligent, for the Lord hath chosen you to stand before him, to serve him, and that ye should minister unto him, and burn incense. 2 Ch. xxix. 11. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! it is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments. Ps. exxxiii. 1, 2. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed; and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. Mat. ix. 2. 20. 22. And the disciples were astonished at his (Jesus') words (respecting the rich man entering hea ven): but Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! Mar. x. 24. Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Ti. i. 2. Let brotherly love continue. He. xiii. 1.

My son.] The Lord make his face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee (said Moses in the name of the Lord). Nu. vi. 25. He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the Lord is gracious, and full of compassion. Ps. cxi. 4. Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. Ps. cxii. 4. And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us. This hath been by your means. Will he regard your persons? saith the Lord of hosts. Mal. i. 9.

30 His bowels did yearn.] Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king (for her bowels yearned upon her son), and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it (said one of the harlots, in Solomon's judgment between them). I Ki. iii. 26. Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still; therefore my bowels are troubled for him. I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the Lord. Je. xxxi. 20. How shall I give thee up, Ephraim ? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim ? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. Ho. xi. 8. For God is my record how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. Phi. i. 8. If there be any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, fulfil ye my joy. Phi. ii. 1, 2. Put on therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering, forbearing one another, and forgiving one another: if any man have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. Col. iii. 12, 13. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 1 John iii. 17.

Wept there.] And he (Joseph) turned himself about from them (his brethren), and wept. Ge. xlii. 24. When Jesus saw her (Mary, the sister of Lazarus) weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in spirit, and was troubled, and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Come and see. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him. And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the grave,' &c. John 11. 33-38. Ye know from the first day that I came into Asia after what manner "I" ("Paul") have been with you at all seasons; serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears and temptations which befell me, by the lying in wait of the Jews. Watch, and remember that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul's neck, and kissed him, sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, That they should see his face no more. Ac. xx. 19. 31. 37. I thank God, whom I serve from my fore

32 and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an 33 abomination unto the Egyptians. And they sat before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the youngest according 34 to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another. And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of their's. And they drank, and were merry with him.

CHAPTER XLIV.

1 AND he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the

fathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day, greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy. 2 Ti. i. 3, 4.

31 Refrained himself.] Then (when Judah said, How shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me?) Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him. Ge. xlv. 1. I have long time holden my peace: I have been still, and refrained myself (saith the Lord, forbearing to manifest himself, and check idolatry). Is. xlii. 14. Thus saith the Lord; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears; for thy work (Israel) shall be rewarded. Je. xxxi. 16. He that will love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile. 1 Pe. iii. 10.

32 Eat bread.] See verse 16. Then (upon making a covenant with Laban) Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread. Ge. xxxi. 54.

("the children of Israel") he (Joseph) gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment. Ge. xlv. 2 To Peninnah his wife he (Elkanah) gave, and to all her sons and daughters, portions (when the time was that he offered): but unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah. 1 Sa. i. 4, 5. And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons. And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee. And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat; for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. 1 Sa. ix. 22, 23, 24.

Were merry with him.] Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine For that is an abomination, &c.] Thy ser- unto those that be of heavy hearts. 33 Sat before him.] And he (Joseph's steward) searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. Ge. xliv. 12.

34 Messes.] And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king. 2 Sa. xi. 8.

Was five times so much.] To all of "them"

CHAP. XLIV. 1 The steward of his house.] And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of

men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth. And put my cup, the silver 2 cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. As 3 soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses. And when they were gone out of the city, and not 4 yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good? Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing. And he overtook them, and he spake unto them 6

his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh (to swear that he would not take a wife for Isaac of the daughters of the Canaanites). Ge. Σχίν. 2. And when Joseph saw Benjamin with "them" ("his brethren"), he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon. And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house. Ge. xliii. 16. 19. and com.

Fill the men's sacks.] Then (after taking Simeon and binding him) Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way. Ge. xlii. 25. And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food. Ge. xliii. 2. Behold, the Lord of hosts doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water. Is. iii. 1.

2 My cup. Hereby shall ye be proved: By the life of Pharaoh, ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither. Send one of you (said Joseph), and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you; or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely ye are spies. But bring your youngest brother unto me, so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. Ge. xlii. 15, 16. 20. And they set on (bread) for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians which did eat with him by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. Ge. xliii. 32. And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee; VOL. I.

to do thee good at thy latter end. De. viii. 2. 16. Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams (who would entice to idolatry): for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul. De. xiii. 3. Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Mat. x. 16. I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others; and to prove the sincerity of your love. 2 Co. viii. 8.

4 Up, follow after, &c.] Now rise up, said I (Moses), and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered. ii. 13.

Wherefore have ye rewarded evil, &c.] And he (Saul) said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rewarded me good (in sparing Saul's life), whereas I have rewarded thee evil. 1 Sa. xxiv. 17. Behold, I say (said Jehoshaphat), how they (the Moabites and Ammonites) reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou (the Lord) hast given us to inherit. 2 Chr. xx. 11. They rewarded me evil for good, to the despoiling of my soul. Ps. xxxv. 12. And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love. Ps. cix. 5. Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house. Pr. xvii. 13. Jesus answered "them" ("the Jews"), Many good works have I shewed you of my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? John x. 32.

5 Divineth.] And Joseph said unto them (his brethren), Wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine? Ge. xliv. 15. And Laban said unto him (Jacob), I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake. Ge. xxx. 27. Ye shall not use enchantment, nor observe times. Le. xix. 26. Now the men (who were sent by Benhadad king of Syria to Ahab king of Israel, begging his life) did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him (king Ahab), and did hastily catch it and they said, Thy brother, Benhadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. So he made a covenant with him. 1 Ki. xx. 33, 34. Why is thy spirit so sad?
