in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

And

again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kindgom of God. When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, and they were astonished out of measure among themselves, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus, looking upon them, beheld them, and said unto them, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. With men this is impossible; but not with God: with God all things are possible. Then answered Peter, and began to say unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus answered, and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, and the Gospel's, and for the kingdom of God's sake, shall receive a hundred fold more, now, in this present time, with persecutions; and in the world to come shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market-place, and said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I

will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. So when even

was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye

evil, because I am good? * So the last shall be first, and the first last for many be called, but few chosen.

Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

That is: "Art thou envious at my being bountiful?" This parable seems designed to represent the case of the Gentiles, who, though left uncalled for so many ages, were yet put on a level, as to acceptance, and religious situation, with the Jews.

;

(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again. His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee and goest thou thither again? Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem ; and Jesus took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of

man shall be accomplished. And Jesus went before them and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve disciples apart in the way, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed and delivered unto the Chief Priests, and unto the Scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles, to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: For he shall be delivered to the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death and on the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.

Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him; saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. She also saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? And they say unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that

I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John; and they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

For even the Son of Man came

not to be ministered unto, but to minister, And to give his life a ransom for many.

THANKSGIVING.

O merciful Saviour, who, by thy holy example as well as by thy preaching, didst teach us great humility, we thine unworthy servants do give Thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men; beseeching Thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and daily to increase our faith and patience by the sanctifying influence of the Holy Spirit. To whom, with Thee and the Father, be all honour and glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
