SATURDAY, July 11.

The king appointed the most hon. John marquis of Tweeddale to be his majesty's justice general of that part of the kingdom of Great Britain called Scotland, in the room of Archibald, duke of Argyll, deceafed.

The subjects appointed at the university of Oxford for the current year, for two orations to be spoken in the theatre for the prize given by the rev. Dr. Thomas Wilfon, prebendary of Weftminster, are, for the Latin oration, Salus populi, fuprema lex. For the English oration, The advantages of a fafe, honourable, and lafting peace.

MONDAY, July 13.

A proclamation was published at Westminfter, Temple-bar, and the Royal-exchange, that the king's coronation would be folemnized the 22d of September next. After the proclamation was ended, the officers of arms upon an invitation from the lord mayor, dined with his lordship at the Mansion-house, where they were most elegantly and politely entertained. Mr. Pranckard, clerk to an attorney in Philpot-lane, being writing at his desk, was alarmed by the cries of a fervantmaid in a room over-head; on which he ran up to her affiftance, and found her in a ftrong fit, which fhocked him fo much that he dropped down, and notwithstanding he was let blood immediately, he expired in a few minutes.

WEDNESDAY, July 15. Admiralty-Office. Capt. Lobb, of his majesty's floop the Swan, gives an account, that on the 11th inftant, being on the coaft of Holland, he took La Fleur privateer of Dunkirk, of two guns and twentynine men, commanded by Simond L'Hermittee, which had been out two days, and had not taken any thing; and that finding the vessel leaky, and it blowing fresh, he was obliged to fink her, after taking out her men.

The earl of Harcourt is appointed one of the lords, to go over to conduct his majesty's intended confort to England; the dutchess of Portland is to be appointed groom of the ftole; lady Bolingbroke first lady of honour; and lord Anson to have the command of the fquadron appointed to bring over that princess.

This day about twelve o'clock, the right hon. the lord mayor, Sir Robert Ladbroke, Knt. Sir Charles Afgill, Bart. Sir Richard

Glynn, Bart. Sir Samuel Fludyer, Bart. and Sir William Stephenfon, Kt. and Alderman, with twelve Commoners, attended by the Sheriffs, &c. went in proceffion from the Manfion-house, and waited on his Royal Highness the Duke of York, at his house in Leicester-fields, with the freedom of this city in a gold box.

This evening between Poftcombe and Lewkner, in the county of Oxford, lady Wenman and mifs Wenman were robbed by two highwaymen; her ladyship of eight guineas and a half and fome filver, and a broad gold Spanish pocket-piece; and the young lady of two guineas and a half. THURSDAY, July 16.

One Thomas Jennings, a cobler, was tried at the general quarter-feffion of the city of Oxford, for ftealing a small quantity of leather from one Clarke, a brother cobler, and and received fentence of tranfportation for feven years; but the next afternoon he was found hanging in Bocardo, on a staple in the ward.

FRIDAY, July 17.

His majesty has been pleased to honour Henry Ellis, Efq; now governor of Nova Scotia, with a grant of 500 guineas, as a mark of his royal favour, in confideration of that gentleman's faithful administration of government in Georgia.

The hon. mifs Beauclerk will be appointed first maid of honour to the queen.

Dr. Drummond, bishop of Salisbury, is to preach the coronation sermon.

They write from Scotland, that general count Laudohn, who commands at present the empress queen's forces in Silefia, obtained not long fince an authentic certificate from North Britain, of his being defcended from a younger branch of the antient family of Lowdon, of Lowdon, in the fhire of Air. The heirefs of this houfe in the 13th century carried the family estate, which was very confiderable by marriage, to Sir Reynold Craufurd into that house, and by an heiress of the the Craufurds, who intermarried with Sir Duncan Campbell, fon to SirDonald Campbell of Redcastle, that estate came to its present poffeffors.

Sir Hugh Campbell, of Lowdown, was in A. D. 1604, created a peer by that title, through the favour of king James the VIth. In the fucceeding reign, John lord Lowdown was railed to the dignity of an earl, from whom the present

earl of Lowdon, a lieutenant-general in his majesty's fervice, and one of the fixteen peers in this parliament is lineally defcended.

SATURDAY, July 18.

John Steel, alias Beaumont, was committed to New Prifon by John Fielding, Efq; charged with divers highway robberies lately perpetrated by him in the county of Middlefex, Surry, and Kent. It is obfervable, that most of the perfons whom this man has robbed, he constantly swore them to fecrecy, or not to defcribe him or his horfe for a certain time.

At Salisbury affizes, which ended on Wednesday last, Mary Jefferies, for murdering her baftard child, and Reuill L'Oifeau, for affaulting and robbing Thomas Dymock, received fentence of death.

Before Mary Jefferies was brought out of prifon, the morning of her execution, she confeffed her crime, but laid great blame upon fome perfons, by whom, the declared to the laft, he was over-perfuaded to commit the murder.

L'Oifeau behaved very penitently, after condemnation; and confeffed at the place of execution, that he intended to have murdered Dymock, as well as robbed him.

SUNDAY, July 19.

Yesterday afternoon about two o'clock, his royal highnefs the duke of York arrived at Scarborough, and was immediately faluted by 21 of the caftle guns, and by all the fhips in the harbour, with their colours flying. At night he went to the affembly-room, and opened the ball with lady Caroline Montague; afterwards played at cards; and this morning was waited on by the whole corporation in their formalities, and walked with them to church, attended by Sir Wm. Boothly, Mr. St. John, Col. Morrison, &c.

Saturday night last about ten o'clock, came on there the loudest claps of thunder that have been known for many years, and continued most part of the night. The lightning was most dreadful; the flashes followed each other so fast, that the firmament feemed to be in a continued blaze for fome time. Mr. Ord, of Sands, near Sedgfield, in the county of Durham, was killed by the lightning that night on his return from Durham. The fame night a farm-house, at Ingleton, near Piersebridge, was fet on fire by the lightning, and burnt down. Several fheep and cattle in different places in Northumberland were killed ; and had not a heavy rain succeeded, many more lives would in all probability have been loft. Several brooks were fwelled to an uncommon height; and great damage has been done to several houfes adjoining, as well as to the hay ground, by the rapidity of the cur

rents.

Accounts have also been received from divers other parts of England, of damages done by thunder, lightning, hail, &c.

TUESDAY, July 21.

The right hon. lady Sondes is appointed one of the ladies of the bed-chamber, to his majesty's intended confort.

The hon. Mifs Neville, fifter to lord maids of honour to her intended majesty; Abergavenny, is appointed one of the as are alfo Mifs Dashwood, daughter of Sir James Dashwood, Mifs Bishop, daughter of Sir Cecil Bishop, and Mifs Meadows, daughter of Sir Philip Meadows.

They write from Bath, that on Sunday morning laft, Mr. Edmund Roach, a Tallow-chandler and dealer in horses, of Marshfield, was found dead near Weftwood, on the road leading to Colerne.

He left Bath on Saturday evening, and his horfe ftrayed the fame night to Colerne. Monday the coroner's inqueft fat on the body, and brought in their verdict, wilful murder; feveral marks of violence appearing. His pockets were turned infide out, and his watch and money taken away.

Monday evening a woman, enquiring for lodging at Colerne, was asked concerning her laft place of abode, &c. and not giving fatisfactory answers, gave some suspicion; and he was thereupon ftrictly. examined touching the faid murder and robbery after fome hcfitation, the con

felfed that her husband and fome others had robbed the aforefaid Mr Roach; and gave intelligence where her husband was to be met with; and he was accordingly apprehended the next morning at Kingston St. Michael, in Wilts. He appears to be

a feafaring man; and on his examination confeffed the robbery, but denied the murder; déclaring that he found the deceased lying dead on the road, having as he fuppofed, been killed by a fall from his horse, and that he thought it no crime to rob a dead man.

THURSDAY, July 23.

The right hon. lord Anfon and many other perfons of diftinction, went to Deptford, where the ceremony of altering the name of the Caroline yatch to that of the Royal Charlotte was performed; and a great concourfe of people was affembled on the occafion. The lords of the admiralty have appointed capt. Dennis to the command of the said yacht.

A certain nobleman has undertaken to ride from London to Edinburgh, with fresh horfes every ftage, in 12 hours. About 40,000l. are depending on the issue.

FRIDAY, July 24.

This day was committed to New-gate at Briftol, Patrick Ward, a marine, belonging to the Devonshire tender, charged on the coroner's inqueft, with the murder of Mr. Henry Morgan, of Shierhampton. The faid Ward was near the water-fide with fome of the ship's company, and having a gun in his hand loaded, which he feemed to ufe in a very regardless manner, Mr. Morgan who stood at a fmall distance off, obferving it, civilly defired him to take care, otherwife fome danger might enfue; without any further provocation, this inhuman wretch came up and difcharged the piece at him, and the ball entering just below his heart he inftantly expired.

SATURDAY, July 25. Admiralty-Office. Captain Henry Scott, of his majesty's floop the Badger, being off Holy Ifiand, on the 17th inftant, fell in with, and took a French privateer belonging to Dunkirk, called the Loup, captain Dithamel, commander, of twelve carriage and eight fwivel guns, and 70 men, with five ranfomers on board; and has brought her into Yarmouth roads.

A poor woman at Hammersmith, going out for fome things the wanted, left two

of her children by the fire; one of whom, a girl about four years old, fet her cloaths on fire; and, before the mother returned, was burnt in fo terrible a manner, that the expired im two hours after, in the greateft agonies.

TUESDAY, July 28.

This day a proclamation was iffued, for recalling and prohibiting British seamen from ferving foreign princes and states, and for prolonging to the 12th of September next the ufual bounties to feamen and able bodied landmen that shall voluntarily enter themselves on board his majesty's fhips of war.

This morning early 20 French prifoners, confined under the court hall at Rochester, broke out and made their escape. Three of them were taken

This day a man died near Golden fquare, occafioned by drinking 14 large glaffes of geneva for a wager.

WEDNESDAY, July 29.

Rear admiral Holmes, commander in chief of his majesty's fhips at Jamaica, gives an account to Mr. Cleveland, that in the morning of the 13th of June the Hampshire man of war fell in with the St. Anne a French fhip of war from Port au Prince and chafed her right down upon the Centaur to the leeward. The Anne was kept between the two ships till fhe run clofe in hore, and becalmed about a league to the northward of Donna Maria Bay, when he began to fire her ftern chace. Soon after one o'clock, the Centaur got clofe along-fide when the ftruck her enfign. She is a very fine ship, constructed for 64 guns, and had on board fix 24 pounders, twenty-fix 12 pounders, and eight 8 pounders, with 389 perfons;. was commanded by M. Aguillon, and was carrying home a cargo of indigo, coffee, and fugar, to the value of one million of French livres. Mr. Holmes fent her into Jamaica.
