To a form whose strength and symmetry seemed to promise many years of enjoyment, and to a fine countenance, the index of an open and ingenuous mind, she had added a heart overflowing with well-directed kindness, especially to those near connections, with whom he exhibited a pleasing example of "dwelling in unity;" but with that equality of distribution which Nature observes in her allotments, what she had given lavishly, she refused to give long. In him this city has to lament the third person of public eminence, and high in popular favour, all, too, of an age when life is reckoned most secure, of whom it has been deprived in little more than a twelvemonth. By the county with whose concerns Mr R. was entrusted, by the friends whose society he gladdened, but above all by the numerous relatives whom he cherished and protected, he will be permanently and sincerely mourned.

General Robert Melville, who lately died in Edinburgh, was of an ancient and honourable family of that name in the county of Fife, and the oldest General now in the British army, except one. He entered, into the army at an early period of life, and having acquitted himself to the satis faction of his superior officers and commanders, on different occasions, he was soon preferred in rank, and afterwards far, ther rewarded by his present Majesty, by the Government of Dominica, and the other, Carribbee Islands. Soon after the peace

of 1763, he had the pleasing task assigned to him, of surveying, lotting and settling the island of Tobago, now a most fertile, healthy, and productive colony. He was a scholar, a philosopher, a soldier, and a man of business, with an enlarged and comprehensive mind. Being of a lively disposition, he was in old age what he haf been in youth and riper years the desi rable companion of men of science, business, and pleasure, young and old. His ear was ever open to the cry of the distressed widow and fatherless, and his hand ever ready to bestow liberally to the deserving poor. He is succeeded in his es tates and name, by his nephew, John Whyte Melville, Esq. of Benochie, in Fife.
