THE edition of lord Clarendon's History of the Rebellion now submitted to the public differs materially from any of those which have preceded it. Till the year 1826 the copy prepared under the sanction of the heirs of the noble author was followed without alteration, as often as reprints were required, and without any reference to the autograph MS. deposited in the Bodleian library. But in the year above-mentioned, a collation having been previously made of the original MS., the variations thereof from the printed text were appended in the form of notes to an edition of the received text: and subsequently many of these variations were adopted in the editions of 1840 and 1843 in large 800 and 18m. It appeared however upon a reexamination of the MS. that there still remained readings which had been overlooked and which ought to have been admitted: and accordingly not only a fresh collation of the MS. has been made, but the a 2 |
