Loading... The Clicking of Cuthbert (edition 2007)by P. G. WodehouseA series of golf stories, supposedly related by the 'oldest member', recounting some famous (or infamous) incident. Usually to a young man disillusioned by either love or golfing. Mildly amusing, with some wonderful caricatures and Wodehouse's usual expert use of language, if a tad convoluted in places. Rather disparaging about women (and non-golfers) but needs to be taken in the spirit in which it was written. Over 100 years old, and I obtained my copy free from Project Gutenbert. Not necessary to be a golfer but probably best if you have at least some idea of the game. Not one of Wodehouse's best, but it made a good read on a dull flight. Longer review here: https://suesbookreviews.blogspot.com/2023/07/the-clicking-of-cuthbert-by-pg-wode... Not being a golfer, I wasn't sure about this one; but it was amusing enough for housework listening. I listened to the LibriVox recording. I do love Wodehouse and there is at least a smile if not a laugh on every page; so three stars? Where I think I went wrong was in treating this as a novel. It really is not, it is a collection of short stories which if dipped into occasionally and individually would probably be very enjoyable. As a whole, I (unfortunately) couldn't wait to get it finished. This collection of P G Wodehouse golf stories is an end-to-end delight. You'd think that reading through 10 stories that all involve the same sport, and the same theme -- the game's effects on its players' love lives -- would be repetitive and quickly boring. This is simply not the case. Although the stories all start the same -- an unnamed golf club's 'oldest member' sits down to tell a tale to a youngster -- they diverge wildly over the great expanses of Wodehousian hilarity: oddball characters; crisp, unpredictable dialogue; slapstick physicality; ridiculous situations borne of human pride -- it's all here, it's just dressed up in loud plaid knickerbockers. Golfers and Wodehouse fans will be in pure heaven reading The Clicking of Cuthbert, but the stories are so good that even the casual reader will find much to enjoy. Highly recommended. |
